Well it's time for a mid week mod update,

Just a small one. The good old Hilux washer upgrade. I used the zippy method

Parts needed: 2x Toyota part 85381-0k010 and 1x zippy tie ($27.50 for each nozzle)

          Old one being removed

          New one fitted

          Nice wide spray

Ok so it's diff breather time.

First of all here is the ebay kit I bought

            http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/291215497...84.m1439.l2649

This is where I chose to mount it. I used the two bolts that were already there

This is where the hose enters the chassis from the engine bay

Where it exits the chassis at the rear

I brought it across and made a loop to allow for movement

For the front diff I took the cap off the stock breather, used a drill bit to make the inside a little larger then jammed the new pipe in. It's a nice and firm fit

For the gear box and transfer I planned to run them separately. Then I took one look at how tight it was to try and separate them and decided F&*K it and I'll just grab the stock breather that was just sitting on top the gearbox and join the new hose to it. Sorry no pics

I will get a 3 breather plate made up later on at work.

While doing the breathers I noticed the passenger drive shaft seal on the front diff was leaking. I'll need to get it booked in next week to be fixed.

Got this all fixed up so no more leaks.

well after going forward and backwards in this puddle a few times my battery light on the dash came on and the alternator stopped charging.

A 2012 D4D hilux that gave it a go after me also experienced the same issue so its obviously not a very watertight alternator on these motors.

the mud was not very thick but was very gritty (sandstone area) and it obviously got into the brushes and stopped them from contacting well.

we removed the alternator, took off the brushes and they were very gouged and the springs were not moving, gave them a light file to make them smooth again, cleaned the shaft, springs and refitted brushes and put the alternator back in the car.

Woohoo no battery light anymore, left the car idle for 30 mins or so and verified the batteries were charging

Nice setup mate. Good quality gear and you seem to know what you're doing in the workshop

How are the Mickey Thompson's going? They look like great tyres, and I'm trying to decide between them and the Cooper S/T Maxx for my next set..

                      Hi MYBO,

I think the key word there is I "seem" to know what im doing :P

Well the Prado is my first 4x4 and I've only had it about 9 months now. but as for the performance of the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's I think they are great. at this stage ill replace them with another set once these are worn out. I'll post a video of some of the tracks I did over this long weekend. I even surprised myself of what the Prado will do.

There are a load of 4x4 nuts that I work with and most of them run and love their Mickey Thompson's. from Hilux's to 80 series cruisers and GU patrols
most are using the more aggressive MTZ's as they are pretty well dedicated play vehicles, we run the ATZ 5 rib on all our work utes that regularly visit various mine sites.

The ATZ P3's replaced the old ATZ 4 rib, mine are quite on the highway and only time will tell how many kilometres I get out of them.

Cheers, good to hear.. They look tough as I'm still close to 20,000 k's from my next set, which is a bit under 12 months for me.. So plenty of time to decide..

the following video was over the long weekend.

I went down to the tracks in and around the Glasshouse Mountains on the Sunshine coast QLD which is about 25mins from home.

note: those with a keen eye will notice the first day I didn't let the tyres down and I still had air in the rear airbags.

Nice video Oli, looks like you had fun and the car(& go pro) came out unscathed except your alternator.

So it's been a little while since my last mod. Trying to work towards a cape trip so I did a water crossing bra with a strap pocket

My main criteria was "Quick to Attach" as if it's to much trouble and effort you won't be bothered to put it on. Also would be good if I didn't have to chop to much of the tarp as having a tarp in the car is always handy.
All said and done it would cost less than $40 (I had all but the tarp already so some prices are estimated)

                                Bill of Materials
                                1.8m x 2.4m 180gsm tarp (~$11 - Bunnings)
~1m square of shade cloth ($5??)
                                2x small carabiners ($2.50 ea)
                                2x small 90 degree brackets ($5 pack of 4??)
                                1-2m of ~10mm diameter bungee cord ($12)
                                2x bungee crimps (pack of 10 $4?)

I am lucky enough to have a mum that has a heavy duty industrial sewing machine that will do thick canvas with ease but I'm sure if you measure and marked everything it would cost bugger all to get someone to do the sewing parts for you

First of all is the front lower mounts
I removed the corner bolt that holds the side bash plate to the arb bar and added the small 90 degree brackets under the bolt (passenger side shown below)

Add the carabina to the tarp and it clips onto the bracket very quickly
                                Repeat for the other side

Next is the rear mounts. With the front connected pull the tarp over the bonet and make a loop with the bungee cord through the eye in the tarp. Remember you will have to stretch it over the mirror so it will be a little loose.

Crimp the bungee cord together and wrap in tape so it dosnt scratch the paint
                                Repeat for the other side

Now for the pocket. Depending on what bullbar and accessories you have fitted the location of the pocket will vary. With the bra fitted mark the location. take note of any sharp corners as you will need to add backing material to stop tearing or ripping at these locations.
NOTE: the weight of the strap in the pocket will pull the bra down a little.
Remove the bra and place the strap into position. Align the shade cloth to form the pocket. Have your seamstress sew the pocket in place. Double over the cloth and 2 rows of stitching will ensure a good strong pocket.

I have now color matched the brackets to the bar, will refit time and take a better pic in the daylight tomorrow. This project took me around 2 hours but I did fart around looking for the solution to the front tarp points
