  • Squeak coming from transfer case joint.

While driving slowly today with both windows down in traffic, I heard a faint squeal... like dry rubber on metal.

I did a bit of Investigating when I got home and found the issue.

I jacked up the front wheel while the car was in neutral (auto) and spun the front wheel.

Right at the joint of where the drive shaft enters the transfer case there is a squeak, like dry rubber on metal.

I head to the Simpson in 4 days time... any help here would be good. If I need to get this fixed, it has to be done in the next day or two.

BTW there is nothing leaking, I gave the joint a quick squirt of silicon spray.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm curious, how this turned out? I'm trying to trace a squeal/whistle that I only get under medium load (not light or heavy load), and can only hear at slow-medium speeds i.e. not on the highway.

I have had this squeal driving me crazing for months. If you can advise on a fix it would be great.

On my 120 series I had a squeal that occurred at strange times and it turned out to be the exhaust joining bracket located under the car middle of drivers door.

Cheers, I'll take a look at this.

The squeak on mine is coming from the place alternative has indicated. I have used silicon spray and it goes away for a day or two before it returns.
It only occurs at speeds of less than 50 to 60 kph.
If anyone can give me an idea of the possible cause it would be great as I'm about to take off on a big trip and am not looking forward to the squeal.

I think mine has just started doing this too...

Its not the pads - i checked and cleaned them. Plenty of pad, no rust or foriegn material.
It does it intermittently but mostly after a high speed drive then slowing down with brakes for traffic - say from 100 to stop but noise comes in around 40kph to 10kph - that's why i checked the brakes first.

Just started doing it after a week of 4wding on Fraser Island.

              Any ideas folks?

So I took off on a trip through the Simpson with this squeak. Before getting to the dirt, I was spraying the flange shown in the picture with lube spray at least twice a day to stop the squeak.
Once I got to the the dirt and sand, I stopped spraying to avoid it attracting too much crap.
After about 500km of low range sand driving, and another 700km of dirt roads, I get back onto the black top ready the start the spraying sequence once again. So here's the kicker, the squeak has not yet returned. During the 2500km return home, or the 3 weeks worth of town driving since the trip, the annoying squeak has not returned!
My theory, which I am happy to be corrected on, is that it needed a good run in low range to lube the flange on the inside of the transfer case. I hadn't engaged low range for about 6 months prior (not by choice), so maybe it needed low range to lube itself? Thoughts

apparently its the output seal on the t box... is this an easy replace jobbie? i.e the t box doesnt need to come out for it?

Curious here, but I can't see how putting it LR would have any effect as the Driveshaft/Flange is always turning whether in HR or LR.... Has it returned yet?
