  • BiLLz0r's 2007 GXL V6 build up.

I figured I would start a build thread for myself as I've bought various bits and pieces since owning the car.

We bought it last October (2013). It's a 2007 facelift (so MY08 spec) V6 GXL in white.
    Already on it was:
    * Black ARB Front bar (non-winch)
    * Snorkel (nfi what brand)
    * Pacemaker extractors and a dual 2" exhaust
    * Rear seat head rest DVD players as well as a roof mount DVD player. The roof mount DVD player is only used for the LED internal lights now. The DVD Player is useless and we don't need it anyway and the USB input doesn't work.
    * Dimpled and slotted rotors all round.
    * Some Ebay touch screen DVD player with reverse camera, USB/ipod connectivity and SatNav. It runs Windows CE and I updated the maps to Q1 2013 last year. It's pretty basic but it gets me by.

Since buying it I have added:
    * 5 x Mickey Thompson STZ tyres in 265/70. No rubbing and the spare fits on the back (just). These made a huge difference to the off road ability to it and often don't even need to lock the center diff.

    * A GME CB with windscreen mount. I had it mounted to the inner kick panel on the drivers side but today pulled it out as I couldn't read it without taking my eyes off the road too long. I'll just use the windscreen mount when we need it. The wife hates it being on unless required anyway.

    * A pair of Maxtrax so I don't have to borrow dads all the time.

    * The left cat was throwing engine error codes. Both cats have now been replaced and have double gaskets on the extractor to cat joins as they kept leaking.

    * The 200K service was recently done which does all the diff oils and that seems to have fixed up the Rear LSD a little to make it work again.

    * I made roof mount brackets to bolt on the OEM side rails for a Tigerz11 awning that also integrates Maxtrax holders with Maxtrax locking pins. Worked great on the recent trip to Fraser/Rainbow (not that I even needed the MaxTrax, haha)
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Rail%20mod.jpg

    * Cleaned the headlights with toothpaste and came up a treat.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-09-31-727.jpg

    * Last week I had the ARB Underbody protection done. Worked great in not shoving so much sand up under the car. It more glided over it rather than shoveling it up.

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...67/UVP/No4.jpg

Here's some pics of the beast:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...rado/Front.jpg
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...o/Leftside.jpg
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Prado/Rear.jpg

After an inspection underneath yesterday I've found the side steps have taken more of a battering than I thought. I want slides but the wife hates them. The OEM steps seem to bend broken easily but not bend back into shape too easy. No money at the moment anyway to replace them.

      Thanks.

Glasshouse Mtns is on the wish list. I've never been myself and without a lift I fear I might come home minus side steps.
There are quite a few SEQ members actually.

went a few weeks ago with 2" lift and I bent one up

it all depends tho, the more you pack the hole the less you bend you step

If you need extra accomplices I'm always keen for new spots. I've never been up there either. Is it suitable to take the family up there as well? Many nice spots to stop or 4wding only?
            Cheers Matt

I know. I haven't used it properly though as in the case I did lift a rear wheel the fronts were still on the ground to provide push and pull.

Thought it was time for an update.
I updated my parker, headlight and ARB bar bulbs over the weekend. There is a FB post in the Aussie 120 page but here's the before and afters.
                  These are in the garage.

                  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...hbeam-fogs.jpg

These are looking at the light itself (although the camera doesn't do it justice)
                  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ts/Parkers.jpg
                  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ightsClose.jpg

I got them off ebay for almost 1/2 the price as retail stores
                  H4's from here:
                  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221888360865
                  H3's from here:
                  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331532034173
Freight was only 2 days from NSW (to Gold Coast).

Changing the parkers and headlight bulbs was easy. The side with the battery on it I had to remove the battery bracket closest to the front and push the battery back a few extra mm to get my hand in there. I have long fingers luckily otherwise the battery would have to come out.
The fog lights were much more time consuming as I had to remove the ARB bar side bash plates (in which I snapped 2 bolts due to rust) and then fault find an existing intermittent connection issue on the left fog. After finding where it was it then started blowing fuses as there was also a short inside the fog light housing that I created replacing the bulb with the plastic housing still in in the bar. I ended up removing the plastic housing the fog light sits in on both sides (you could do it without removing them but there's almost no room to move). With the housing out you can easily see what you're doing, neatly route the cables inside the water proof section and give it all a clean whilst you're at it.
I've only used them once at night since and it's definitely a whiter/cleaner light.

I also converted my home made awning/maxtrax holder that uses the standard rails into a roof rack so I can take a surf ski on the roof.

I decided to mount my UHF to the car finally. It's a GME model with the windscreen suction cap and 12V accessory plug. It's not 1 less thing I need to pull in/out when going on trips.
                    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../CBMounted.jpg
I removed the ash tray and then the front panel off it (just 2 clips). Positioned the mounting bracket on the front, marked to holes and predrilled them. Used 2 very short (10mm if that) self tappers and secured it on. Screwed on the CB and put the ash tray back and connected it to the 12V socket. I can now remove the ash tray to get the connectors on the back (power and antenna) easily. I'll run the antenna out to the outside of the car when I get a short extension lead. It's just tucked in behind the CB until I do.

Well as I had 5-10mins free I've been running cable etc to get my portable CB installed permanently whilst still maintaining it's "portability". It's on the face of the ash tray so if I need to remove I remove the ashtray and unplug the cables. Done.
It's as per previous post but finished now. Pics below with the whole cable run and finished product.
CB Mounted as finished (yes I have reversed the display since taking the pic): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...20Mounted1.jpg
It's accessible, in arms reach but out of the way of SHMBO as she hates the site of it (I dunno why). I unplug the mic cable from the front when not required.

                      Mini 2W antenna: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...CB/Antenna.jpg
It's only for short mine of site stuff, recoveries chat whilst driving together so 2W is fine.
Cable run down the windscreen: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...creencable.jpg
It's just held in by electrical tape every so often so far. I might silicon it in at some stage.

Coming out the other side on the inside: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...deFirewall.jpg
I had to buy/make a 1.2mtr extension cable from the unit to the FME socket in the last pic.
I ordered the wrong extension cable so cut the wrong plug off and crimped on a FME male plug to connect to the std antenna FME female.

Nice work Bill, I would slip a bit of heat shrink over the FME plugs though, insulate the outter from other conductors and help keep the connection clean and corrosion free. If the outer part of the connector earths it will change the SWR reading of the antenna, not drastically but will still affect it.

Time for an update in my build up thread.
Last weekend I put on my lightbar and 2 * 18W spots. This weekend I just finished some minor details to make it a properly finished job.
My car is 12V +ve switched (not -ve like many other are) which in the end made it easier to wire up. I sourced a 12V feed for the highbeam from the drivers side kick panel. It's a red with white stripe wire (runs the left headlamp). That goes into the dash switch and the output from the switch to the relay in the engine bay.
The 2 spots can be turned on with no relays or triggers. Just on when I want then via a fuse box in the engine bay and switches in the dash.
                            Here are the results:
                            Light mounted on ARB bullbar.

                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...rooflights.jpg

Rear spot bracket I made up so it's out of view from the reversing camera.
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ghtbracket.jpg

Roof spot bracket to lower it's mounting position for shopping center carparks. The light is boled on with a wing nut so I can loosen it slightly and turn the light another direction.
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ghtbracket.jpg

Dash switches from SuperCheap. They're the Ridge Rider brand and fitted straight into the factory holes. Only thing they don't have is dash light illumination for night time (which is when you basically use the lights).
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...witchesOff.jpg

                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...SwirchesOn.jpg

Engine bay fuse box from JayCay. If it detects a fuse blown there's a small LED next to each fuse so you know one has blown. The twin core cable is rated to 15A and was from JayCar too. That cable runs to each of the small spot lights.
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ct/Fusebox.jpg

Lightbar Relay. The wiring kit/relay/switch cable with the lightbar. I cut the old switch off and used the rocker switch.
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ject/Relay.jpg

                            Lightbar cable to engine bay:
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...htbarcable.jpg
                            https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...tbarcable2.jpg

I'm happy with the project and have used the rear light for reversing at night at few times already.

Figured it was a while since I updated my build thread.
A few weeks ago I did the rear door strut mod and it works freakin' awesome. The wife says it's a bit hard to close for her but she has no strength. I'd rather it be a bit harder to close then having it hit me in the back/ass/head every time I opened it, especially on hills or windy days.

For the past few months I've been chasing a P0420 error code (bank 1 post cat sensor error). After first cleaning the sensor, swapping bank 1 and bank 2 sensors over, having the cat checked, installing 6 new spark plugs (they were due anyway) and swapping the left and right ign coils over I ordered 3 new fuel injectors. Whilst I was waiting for them to arrive I had a brain fart. Check for exhaust leaks. The wife mentioned the other day the car sounded different. I whacked the blowervac on the exhaust pipe, set it to blow and turned it on. I then used a spray bottle with some shampoo in it to spray on the flanges and welds. Low and behold the flange post cat and just b4 the sensor was leaking. It was blowing more bubbles than a newborn during it's first feed.
Off it went to the exhaust shop today. Turns out both bank 1 and 2 post cat flanges were buggered (they were very rusty) and also my middle muffler is shagged. It'll all get fixed and hopefully I'll get the car back tomorrow and no more P0420 codes. The codes were very intermittent (every 3 weeks or so) so it took a long time to find.
