  • Derek's 150 GXL

    Evening all,

Well, after spending a few days "lurking" around here on the forums it's time for me to jump in and start my own build up thread. I've read about 6 already. Fantastic stuff, and now I'm very green with envy. This is also my first post with hopefully many more to come.

I previously owned a 90 series petrol for a few years back at the beginning of the century... Have been out of the 4WD game for about a decade, but 3 kids later and a larger income has brought me to today where my wife and i place our order for a brand new Silver Pearl D4D Auto 150 GXL. At $64,100 on road (Sep 14 badge), it was a pretty easy decision. We take delivery on Wednesday (8th) next week - hopefully. We're in Sydney.

I've just spent over an hour reading Matt's 150 GXL buildup - man alive if you're looking for inspiration that's a decent way to get it - LOL.

So, below is what I have on the cards and I'm 100% sure I'll come back and edit this post a few times as I make up my mind and settle on what's gonna be going on my rig. We're also hoping to pick up a Lifestyle Extenda camper trailer in the coming months. Think we may have found a barely used 2012 model up in QLD. Anyhoo here's the list:

    What I have so far:
    • 2014 Prado 150 Series Turbo Diesel - Auto (Silver)
    • Toyota factory towbar
    • Bridgestone Dueler A/T 697s - Not entirely convinced here, however dealer did them at almost no charge whereas the Cooper's would have been $700 changeover... Time will tell. I've only ever used BFG A/Ts
    • Bonnet protector

Where I want to head. You'll notice I really haven't made any decisions on the specifics, just general plans for the mods I'm gonna do.
    • Seat covers (Wet Seat?)
    • Electric braking system - for trailer
    • Some kind of roof rack system
    • 40mm lift, possibly more
    • Bull bar (undecided)
    • Snorkel
    • Some kind of dual battery kit
    • Spotlights
    • Cargo barrier
    • Tuning chip?
    • More stuff I haven't thought of yet ;-)

I'm not expecting my build to be quick, but we are planning a Cape York trip in July next year so I'm gonna have to get some stuff done and I expect I'll be bugging you guys with a tonne of questions regarding what's important and what's not. I'm in no rush... Not planning on getting rid of this baby any time soon

Looking forward to the journey ahead!
    Derek

Hi, we are in similar position, did lots of 4wding years ago, pre-family, mainly in our 1990 Toyota 4-Runner (sad to let go, great vehicle) and now we have finally got our 'new' vehicle, 2010 GXL auto, nothing added except tow bar. We want minimum of bull-bar, roof racks, brake controller but not sure what else we will want/need. 2 children, 5 & 8 yrs old, been planning various trips around Australia while our girls still young & in primary school. Have our minds set on a camper trailer too. Trying to decide on basics first eg should we get a winch-compatible bull-bar or not? Seems wise to get a brake controller too if we intend towing camper trailer? We want to do our first trip in new vehicle to Flinders Ranges area and even wonder if factory fitted tyres are OK. As new members to Pradopoint, I am already impressed with the amount of information available on the site and number of people in similar situation to us. We'd love any feedback and will follow this thread to help us decide what we need, cheers Julie

            Julie,

            Sounds like you're at a similar stage to us! We've got 3 boys 3, 5 and 7.

I would have thought that factory fitted tires would be ok in the F. Ranges. But I haven't been there since I was a kid so couldn't be sure.

              WOO HOO!

One very happy new Prado owner here today... Picked it up this afternoon and enjoyed a surprisingly pleasant 1.5 hour Sydney peak hour drive back home! I've posted 2 pictures below... Nothing too special at this point, it's pretty much stock apart from the tires, but I'm a very happy man

Looks like mine did when i first got it, except I've got white writing in on the tyres.

Enjoy it and let the mods begin!!

I almost went for the graphite but having had a dark 90 series in years past I couldn't bring myself to do it. They show up every little scratch and brush from shrubs etc... Wanted something a little more practical but didn't want white!

@AussieAndy, I'm most probably doing the Cape next year so the mods will begin soon!

Pretty much around the same time. Mid to late June. We're probably gonna take 2 weeks to Cooktown, 2 weeks on the cape and then 2 weeks to get home (potentially via Camoweal / NT). Coming from Sydney... Will have to take the kids out of school for a few weeks... But they'll be in Years 1 and 3 so no biggy there.

This will be my first big trip since I did the Old Ghan and the Oodnadatta back in 2002 in a troopy! - LOL...

                            Hey Derek,
If it were me, the first mod would be a Catch Can to keep that lovely new engine nice and clean.

Thanks for the heads up Toe... Will look in to it now and add it to the ever growing list of items... I'll make sure I put it up close to the top...
