  • Prado slides on reverse - steep driveway

    Hi guys,

I have a pretty steep driveway and when I am reversing down the car seems to slide for about a second and a noise like the ABS comes on and then it halts. Is this normal? I have never experienced this with any other type of car. It's only on my driveway. I have reversed in other inclines with this car and it is fine.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Hey Turbo,

My Grande sometimes does the same thing.
I thought it may have been a normal thing.

    Hope someone sheds some light

    Cheers

    Tokhi

It is normal and has been covered several times.

I can make it happen when still rolling backwards shifting from R to D. All it is hill start assist which doesn't work because it's supposed to stop you rolling backwards. It lets you roll backwards does a song and dance and you drive off.

Much prefer the Subaru design, based on the clutch clamping two diagonal calipers and auto releasing when driving forward. No roll back at all. The new outback uses a grade sensor and the electric park brake instead to the same effect.

        The prado version is useless.

Today i reversed slower and it didnt do it. I will roll in neutral next and see if it happens.

          Thanks!

Dealer said it is how Prado's hill start assist works. So when inclining in D, it will roll back a bit before the assist kick in. The light on the dash will flash, and you will hear the ABS sound, just like the sound of traction control when offroad.
I tried several times at my driveway. I have to say it works but make me nervous because you won't know how far it will roll back before the assist kick in. The ABS sound makes me feel I am ruining the car. It is embarrasing when you drive off from your driveway, making some serious "off road" noise.
            Has anyone experienced this?

A steep incline will do this. As posted in this thread previously.

The hill hold can't cope with certain inclines/ angles and you'll get the pop pop going under the bonnet.

Do you think it is due to its weight?

It's due to the incline. I have mine do it on one inclined corner which has a stop sign and an up hill turn every time.
As it only lightly holds the brakes ( to allow the car to move against them) it gets to a point the hill hold can't cope, and the car thinks it is slipping so applies traction control.

Not a fan of reversing or driving down a steep incline in neutral, a safety issue.

Only just realised your reversing. My answers were in relation to the hill start assist. Which is normally in drive.

Yours could possibly be abs kicking in. Does it happen as you brake whilst reversing? Front of car would be unloading and may cause an abs situation...
have someone watch and see if any of he wheels appear to stutter or skid.

So when traction control light flashes and vehicle automatically brakes, it is not the hill start assist but the traction control that works? My driveway is steep. So If I don't use handbrakes when driving off, does it do harm to transmission or other things?

Yes. It sounds like traction control.
