  • Kakadu Factory Rear Diff Lock

    Hi all,

Just noticed the factory rear diff lock in my Kakadu only activates when the center diff lock is activated AND also set to low range.
Is this how they are supposed to be?

    Cheers

my truck has an OEM diff lock

you have to be in Lowlo, which engages the centre diff
then you can manually select the rear diff lock, when you're in neutral and stopped

If you are in a situation that requires diffs to be locked, you should be in Low range...

Most of the Time Prado will handle a lot of hefty stuff without locking a diff or even going low range...

        Cheers guys.

Consulted the off road manual and it never said anything about needing to be in low range for the rear diff lock to engage. Also went to the dealer and the service technician shrugged his shoulders and said you probably need to be off road for it to work.
Tried searching the forums and Google and found nothing.

The rear diff lock on the Kakadu will only engage when in low range and if the center diff lock is active. Page 129 and 130 of the Off-road Driving Owner's Manual talk about this. If you try to engage the rear diff lock without these two enabled you will see the rear diff lock light on your dash flash red, but it wont change to constant because it cant engage.
Likewise if you do have it engaged, it will automatically disengage if you switch off either the center diff lock or L4.

You should only need the rear diff lock in really tough conditions anyway which is why Toyota only want you engaging it once you've tried all the rest of the party tricks.

              Thanks Niall.
My Kakadu is out of warranty in the next couple of months so thought I'd check to see if everything is working as it should

                    Hi.

I have a 2016 Prado Kakadu which I use extensively off road and can confirm that the center diff lock must be engaged before the rear locker can be.

This is no problems as in off road situations, it is better to engage the center diff lock first, which can be engaged in H4, where as you must stop, select neutral and be in L4 to engage the rear locker.

The rear locker is a useless piece of crap anyway, compared to my front ARB air locker which is fabulous.

I have placed many posts on my frustration with the Toyota rear locker!

                    Cheers.

As a gxl owner I have been spared these frustrations with the Toyota diff lock. Out of curiosity, once the rear diff lock is turned on, is the traction control on the front wheels turned off as is the case with the new hilux? I have an aftermarket rear locker on mine and find that the combination of the locker on the back and the TC doing its thing up front the wagon is very capable.

G'day troops, just wanted to ask if anyone has had any dramas with there Diff Locker engageing..

I just recently purchased a 2012 Kakadu and just tried the locker and it doesn't seem to be 'locking' or at least the light on the dash is still flashing..

In 'LowLow' as you call it, ha ha, and centre diff lock light does its flash then stays on, pretty sure it says that diff lock indicator light is supposed to do the same thing it just keeps on flashing...

Anyone possible got an thing idea of what I could check before taking it in to toyota..!?

                        Cheers..

Did you put it in Neutral first?

Ha ha welcome to the nightmare of rear Toyota e locker owners!

Yes we all have these problems.

As per manual you must be stopped, in neutral and have low range engaged and centre diff lock engaged to activate the e locker.

The light will flash for ages when locking and unlocking and my 2016 Kakadu did this from new.

You need to make sure the centre locker switch has stopped flashing first before engaging the rear e locker.

The light will flash for ages but I tend to drive off slowly turning from side to side and this is useful during locking and unlocking.

This is why I have spent ages researching an alternative air locker.

Have you tried just driving off with it flashing? Mine never engages if the car is stationary but if I drive away with it flashing I never get more than about 10m before the lights goes solid on. My guess is something needs to line up right before it can lock.
