  • Places to go - before/after TAS 2015GTG

OK, I'll put up some things that might be of interest for those down here for the GTG.

Obviously, I like Sandy Cape - if accessable.
There is the township of Balfour (can be accessed without doing the Balfour track) in the same area.
I also like Montezuma Falls on the West Coast.

Of course there is the Balfour track for those that want to do it.

I'm sure others will chime in with other ideas.

Off just 4wd'ing topic and more tourist things - Beaconsfield mine tour, platypus and sea horse tour are all close to each other and you can pay to go on all three tours with one ticket there is also tazmazia out in Sheffield great for kids then you have Wings Wildlife park and if you get there the rite time you can have hands on a Tassie devil and you can also camp there for a small fee all those are with in an hour of Devonport about 1-1/2 west is "THE NUT" in Stanley and of course you have the town ship of Strahan on the west coast that is worth the drive. Great Lakes is one of my favourite spots were free camping off Sorell Lake is a beautiful spot to camp. Can also free camp at lake Parangana just out of Mole Creek which is probably the best camp site I have been to in Tasmania great for kayak and fishing can not comment on the caves at Mole Creek as I have never been there but it is close by. Just a few ideas

Mole Creek caves were excellent 10 years ago when we went, sure they still are.

Went to Mole Ck last year and it still is. While in this area Sheffield is worth a look at all the buildings painted with murals.

Just adding a few ideas and thoughts that might be of interest to those who will be in the state for the GTG.

http://www.thewalltasmania.com/ -Artist Greg Duncan is creating a stunning sculpture at Derwent Bridge in the heart of Tasmania. The Wall in the Wilderness is Greg Duncan’s commemoration of those who helped shape the past and present of Tasmania’s central highlands.
A work in progress, The Wall is being carved from three-metre high wooden panels. The carved panels will tell the history of the harsh Central Highlands region - beginning with the indigenous people, then to the pioneering timber harvesters, pastoralists, miners and Hydro workers.

http://www.wcwr.com.au/ - West Coast railway. Travel from the heart of Queenstown deep into the West Coast mountains to the beginning of the iconic ABT Rack and Pinion section of track. The first of its kind in Australia, the system enables the locomotive to traverse the steep slopes. The Rack and Pinion is a must see for all who travel to Queenstown.

For something out of left field. When we visited 10 years ago we stumbled onto a spot called Laughing Jack Lagoon, on the track into the lagoon is a huge wooden pipeline around 5 feet diameter, it was one of the highlights of our trip for me, I thought it was amazing. Worth the drive into the lagoon even without the pipeline.

The lagoon is not far from Lake St Clair.

I would post a picture but don't have a digital copy.

            Cheers Andrew

That is a wood stave pipeline and is still used today by Hydro Tasmania. We are planning showing some of the Hydro Tasmania pipelines as we tour around.

Yeah we worked out it was hydro, sounds like your one step ahead with the planning, should be a great GTG.

Bellingham to bridport beach run is fun. (i think its in gtg) Pyengana, cheese shop, pub in the paddock where the pig drinks beer, st Columbia falls, then str8 up the JEEP track, where it says no thru rd, just keep going. After a very fun track you will come out near MT black boy. ( falls). Some good tracks to play on around mathinna, & really great camping areas along the river.

Ben lomond is pretty cool too. Raggedy jack. In sept likely snow zone up there.

Plenty to see round St. Helens, play on the dunes at steglitz. Get a curry scallop pie on the way down, there's a shop/servo sells them.

Coles bay another top spot, some cool little tracks around out to the nuggets & Cape tourville.

Plenty to see & do, where does it end, hopefully some of that & lots more is on the gtg, I have no idea.

That is on the gtg side of Tassie easy access.

We are doing a Tassie trip again in feb, but will be south, have one or two locals showing us around, so will be able to report more accurately after feb.

If anyone is planning on going to any of the National Parks while here in Tasmania, you will require a National Parks Pass. They can be found here at http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/?base=914 or you can visit a number of places in Tasmania to purchase one.

A Parks Pass is not required for the GTG.

                      Brewery Tours

If you are interested in how the beers are made in Tasmania then why not have a look at doing a tour through either the Boags factory in Launceston or the Cascade factory in Hobart.

                        Right!

Peeps, we buy our passes on the boat on the way over on our day sail. Easy!

                          Tahune AirWalk

If you’re looking to escape the concrete jungle, look no further.
Tahune AirWalk offers a variety of forest walks which will definitely calm the mind, body and soul.
The AirWalk averages heights between 20-30metres above the forest floor, with the very last section, the cantilever, sitting at a height of 48metres above the river and is where you will get the best views.
