  • Fitted a Derale therostat switch/tap to trans cooler line line to bypass cooler when car is cold. Was going to fit the Derale cooler as it was about twice the capacity of the Davies Craig 698 unit with electric fan, but to big to fit, it was bought for my HiLux anyway.
Fitted the 698 Davies craig unit with Tin's brackets.
The top cooler hose is the return to the tranny on the radiator, fitted longer test hoses to both lines when top hose disconected, oil only came out hose from radiator top port.
Will have the car back assembled by Saturday then will give it a long run to test. Sent scan gauge2 away for updates so I can refit to car.
    Cheers

Do you loose much fluid if you disconnect the hoses? I already installed the cooler, but haven't decide if I could use joiner or disconnect whole pipe from bottom and run 2m hose without joiner.
Also how did you manage to fill the fluids back up? I heard Tranny fluid level is temp sensitive.

      • Hi
I disconected top hose on radiator, and capped top outlet. Oil drained back into trans from rubber hose taken off.
I filled cooler lines with a pump bottle till oil came out of lines and plugged.
I then used a syringe and connected top radiator outlet line first topping up cooler hose with plug out.
Then remove cap on radiator and fitted that line.
Then filled return line from new cooler after plug was removed, I had a extra 50ml of oil in syringe emptied it into original cooler return hose then joined the two hoses together.
I just worked on the assumption that 50ml of extra oil would not be enough to over fill the trannie.
All seems to be working ok with a scan gauge for water temp on a trip to Adelaide. Updated scan gauge has not come back from Ample Outdoors yet.
        Cheers

          Hello boys,
I have been reading through about the transmission cooler and just fitted one ( I tow a caravan ) I haven't connected the pipes to the original one yet but think I will just join my return with a joiner near the top of the radiator cooler , a lot easier and cheaper, and really just the same as running down to the steel pipe ,

I haven't seen a definite way to flush the tranny yet and get the level right, haven't really looked for a filler or a level plug either, went to one auto shop and was quoted , ..... Must check but sure it was $360 for oil change 75 % and an extra $160 for a flush ,
If it's possible to do it yourself, full flush and maybe take the sump of and replace any filters ? In there,
Is it a drain and top up and repeat till clean , run motor and then drain ??
A bit of a run through would be appreciated. ( 09 120 series ) 228 ks not sure of history with gearbox oil changes .

          Cheers Alan.

            • Just fitted the Craig Davis oil cooler with Tins brackets (excellent fit) now contemplating wether to run the return line all the way to the steel line or use a brass fitting at the top. Do I have to take the bash plate to run the full hose or how do I go about it as less joins less headaches and I would prefer to do it this way.
Also where in Melbourne southside can I get a Litre of Toyota transmission fluid.
              Thanks in advance.

              • Hi mate, I ran the return back to the transmission and you do need to drop the bash plates to access it. Can't help you with the fluid though.

                    • What thermal switch has everyone been using?

Searching at the moment and coming up with nothing

                      Cheers

                      • I don't use a thermal switch on mine at all. Living in the prings where the outside temp is 40+ a lot and never needed it.

                        • Hi Kayne
If you are talking about the one I used, It was got on ebay.
It is made by Derale and I installed it between the inlet to the cooler and outlet back.
It is thermostatic to open and it lets about 5% through when closed to stop hammer or any air lock.
I fitted it so main tranny warmed up quicker and only flows through cooler when it reaches about 80 degrees from memory.
You do not need it, but I installed it for quicker tranny warm up in the colder months.
                          Cheers

                          • Hi Everyone
I have just traded the 2010 3.0 diesel in and now have a 2017 2.8 diesel - and have just swapped over the DC678 transmission cooler. Like so many others, I had purchased a set of Tin's brackets for the old car. The new car has an air conditioning pipe running across the bottom, in front of the radiator. The simple fix was to insert a 3" spacer at the base of the transmission cooler and keep the top brackets under the horn mounts. The result is an angled transmission cooler but it works just as well. Very quickly noticed a 15 to 20 degree drop in the auto transmission pan fluid temp.
                            Regards

Are you still selling the brackets?
