      Hi Folks

I finally got round to replacing the dash after having the spare sitting in my spare room for 3 months. I'm please to say while you might think its daunting, its not really though when you've got the dash apart you're thinking, what have i done :-) Here are a few more points I found along the way that might help you. My Prado is a 2004 GXL (no climate)

      1) You will need to fully remove the instrument cluster, you cant take off the dash without it. The plugs are very interesting and VERY simple. On the top of the dash each plug has a large white plastic screw that pulls the plug to the dashboard. Unscrew the large plastic screws and it pushes out the plug.

      2) The dastard vent cables for the airbox and heater. The plastic clips that hold the cable ends get brittle and of course will break no matter how careful you are. When I put it back together, I used toothpicks to slip in behind the plastic lugs to push them towards the cable ends to force a good grip. There are lots of tricks you can do here but that's how I held the lugs in place. They wont move :-)

      3) You will have to slide the console back, it is in 2 bits. Hard to tell you how but with a plastic pry tool you will find how it comes apart. You dont need to pull it fully out, just slide it back a little to get the dash out.

When you have it all out you can see how simple the design is. You really don't have to remember what screw goes in where, its fairly intuitive. On my first pass I had 4 large screws left, drat. After poking around I found I was too hasty in putting the glovebox shell back in, there were the 4 holes !!!!

All up, its restored the interior to its former glory...Very pleased with the outcome as I replace some other trim around the console. As I live in "the Alice" I've done lots of trips, I took the opportunity to get the compressor out and clean all the dust out. I'd all but forgotten about the "cabin filter", my god it was full of dust !!

      Cheers and happy tinkering...

Hi Willem, I just wanted to say thanks for your post in 2014 on your Prado dash R &R. I'm about to start mine and as they say a picture is worth a thousand words and your photos will be a big help. Best regards, B double.

If you have a KDJ120 Prado GLX with climate control, you will have to pull the entire dash out as the evaporator box is in 2 pieces and joined in the middle.

It has taken me about 6 hours to get it out and I would estimate probably the same to get it all back in.
