  • Rear Underbody water tank for 150 Prado

I've been wanting a water storage solution for the 150, even more so after the weekend trip up a muddy track. I don't want to compromise storage space inside so the cavity between the towbar and rear fuel tank seemed to be the perfect spot to store some water.

I've only just started to design a storage tank. I will be making it out of stainless and it will hold about 30 litres in the current configuration. I could probably get another couple of litres but I wanted to make sure it stays within the departure line to avoid damage.

I still have to design the mounting brackets. They will either attach to the chassis rails or the towbar.

I'm after some input and suggestions.

    1. What is the best way to fill an underbody tank? It will be pretty awkard to get underneath if I were to have a filling cap directly on the tank. I'm thinking a small hose with a garden hose fitting.
    2. What is the best way to access the water. Should I have a simple tap behind the mudflap or pump it up with a hand pump or electric pump.
    3. Breathers? I will need these for filling and draining. I was thinking a diff breather style system. One on each end.
    4. How much baffling will I need inside. Is sloshing a big issue?
    5. Level indication. Any suggestions on a way to gauge how much water is left in the tank other than a clear tube on the side of the tank?

    Hi
On the water level gauge. A caravan tank water gauge would work well, electronic gauge that could be installed inside vehicle.

Have a look at the long ranger tank for the 120. That should give you some ideas.
The tap is behind the left mudflap and the fill point is in the top of the bumper where the wind down thingy would be if you had the spare underneath.
It's attached to the chassis rails on both sides to hold it up

Here's some pics of it on my 120. I'm sure you can whip something up from these after seeing all the other stuff you've done.

How close does the 120 one fit the 150?
If you do go ahead and build a tank, I will be interested in getting one as well.

Thanks for the photo Blakmoth. They will come in handy. Does the tank have any breathers?

I will look into the caravan accessories for the water level.

I believe the 120 long ranger tank will not fit the 150. The 120 one is only 21 litres. There is a bit more room in the 150 even with the Toyota bar installed.

It doesn't have breathers Tin. But looking at that should give you a good starting point for yours.

                    Laser parts are here

Laser pressing are back ready for some TIG welding.

I've ordered the caravan water level sender probe and indicator display. I'm going to run breathers and will fill and drain from a tap underneath. I have decide not to put any baffles since it is only a max of 30 litres sloshing around.

Hopefully have something together in the next week or two.

Might be a good way to access the water.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a really good way to access the water instead of kneeling down under the car. Price for pump and tap is pretty good too.

                            Welding

Should be good for a test fit on the weekend.

Still waiting for some fittings and a tap.
