But I think the outlet/tap would benefit from some stone protection?

Yeah, not too happy with the tap position. I just went with a configuration similar to the Long ranger tank for the 120. I'll be changing to a pump and door mounted tap. I've got all the bits just need a couple of hours to put it in.

That looks like a great addition to the Prado.

Do you have plans to sell / share plans or completed product.

      Thanks
      John

Once I'm happy with a workable tap outlet/filling arrangement I could look into providing completed tank. If I can get a few interested people it will keep the cost down.

New lower tap and rear door tap.

I found a tap that I'm happy with now. Departure angle clearances are much better. The tap is chrome plated, quarter turn and lockable.

I also installed pump and faucet combo I got from Whitworths. I was concerned that the pump might not have enough grunt to push the water up the metre or so to get the the door but it worked really well.

It was a bit tricky getting the 10mm hose and all the required wiring through the rubber hose thing between the door and the car. WD40 is you friend and in the end it wasn't too bad.

I also mounted the level meter indicator on the back door near the tap. The flat section in front of the door grip hole almost looked like it was designed for it from the factory.

          Packed away when not needed.

The way I plan to use the tank will be to fill it from the lower outlet which has the hose connection on it. I hook it up to the garden hose and it takes a few minutes to fill it. Its full when water starts trickling out of the breathers. Because the pump is a centrifugal pump with not valves the water also comes out the faucet if you don't turn the tap off quick enough. Just need to make sure the door is open when filling or you'll get the boot wet.

I will also make up a length of hose with a connector and a funnel if I need to fill it from somewhere without mains pressure water.

Tin.... That is an awesome job. I was looking at my Prado trying to puzzle out a water carrying solution and definately would not have come up with something of this quality.

Keep me posted if you decide to put it into production.

I took the car out for a day trip to the Glass house mountains on the weekend to test out the swaybar disconnects and clearance around the water tank.

Tackled some steep rutted climbs, tight washed out tracks and some small bog holes. Don't want to brag too much, but the Prado was easily the most controlled and capable rig on the day. Much less wheel lifting or wheel spin than the others. Traction control as always is very impressive.

Major weaknesses were the side step clearance and departure angle. I dragged the ass over plenty of dirt and mud. I kept on checking the tank everytime I got out expecting the tap to be ripped off. However all was intact and working even though I managed to put a dent in the rear fuel tank guard and a few more scratches on the towbar. I was pretty happy. Also having water to wash off all the mud and dust was a bonus.

As for going into production. Its on my to do list this week to get a costing together to make a small batch. Being 100% stainless steel, cost will be a challenge, but I'm looking into ways to make it cost effective. I'll have proposal together in the next week or so and see how much interest there is.

I'm off to Moreton Island over easter so will be glad to have the tank and it will be another chance to do a bit more hands on testing.

Tin...I love your work, your obviously a man of great detail. My 120 Prado spends much of it's life in the garage. If you would like a project to trail fit one to a 120 series..PM me and I should be able to work something out for a week or two. Time limited offer though as my partner is nearish to getting her licence..so I loose the sedan!

I recently bought some 20l Willow plastic jerries, strapped them to my lifestyle rack and used the 'old' garden sprinkler jet gun as a tap (with drinking grade hose). Works great, this just looks a lot neater and practical.

The 120 doesn't have as much room as the 150. There is a plastic water tank made by Longranger.

                      http://thelongranger.com.au/pradolongrangefueltank.html

It only holds 21 litres. A stainless tank made to fit that space would have even less capacity. So unfortunately, its really a good candidate for a stainless steel water tank.

I know once I show the boss your setup Tin she's gonna want a tap on the back door. Any way you can tell us the parts involved so I can try and fit it to my tank?
                        Cheers mate. Awesome work again

Doesn't look to me as if those straps are adequate. How will they be able to support a whole body weight with head lying under the taps?
