Now I realise that the mag relies on advertising dollars and advertiser would expect favourable treatment.
I have looked at these campers and was quite impressed at the quality. I also like the fact that they are an Aussie company employing Aussie workers designing their own product rather than ripping off other Aussie designs and then going O/S for manufacturing. I would hope and believe that if they had a problem then they would learn and improve the product from that experience., product development.
When I seen these campers at the Sydney 4x4 show they had a larger version trailer that can carry quad bikes and the like and those All4 adventure guys Simon and Jason were using one, and if there was going to a problem then those pair would find the weakness.
Like any story there are always 2 sides to the storey, and even when both parties think their side is factual their can be a big difference in the true facts and each party will do whatever it takes to protect their recollection of events and so integrity .
Also I note that there is competition to win a Patriot camper that I will enter , any thing for free.

They have given out awards in various price ranges and also trailer types. ie $20k to $30k, over $30k etc and also Soft floor, Hard floor, Hybrid, slide on campers etc, in all I think there was 4 awards. covered over 2 issues of the mag, I haven't seen the 2nd issue only bought the 1st issue to read in the camp chair when away after xmas.

I use to work for one of patriots suppliers, word came through about a roll over of one of their trailers, wether it was caused from a broken drawbar, or a broken drawbar was the end result, I don't know.
So in short, yes it did happen, but I'm sure they have rectified the problem.

          Hey,

There is a rollover in the video link at about the 3 minute mark in post #9 on the first page of this thread, and it has nothing to do with the apparently broken drawbars in the Simpson desert.

...as you say though, it's likely the drawbars have been beefed up since.

Many thanks to all the responses about both the Patriot X1, and valid alternatives.

We have since had a VERY good look at the Patriot and can say that Patriot has many fine attributes, with the layout of the camper being very well executed, and thought out. The quality of the build also appears to be at a very professional level.

The sticking point for us was the rooftop tent, and combined family pack, which was, (for us), less than ideal.

We realise that you can specify "any" rooftop tent, you desire; ....and we even considered not adding the tent, and just using our existing BlackWolf 240 Turbo Lite Plus, which we have found to be excellent in every way; .. and ...anyway... we could always add a tent later if/when a better option presented itself??

We visited the Newcastle show over the weekend of 7-8th February, to have another look at the alternatives.

Unfortunately, Drifta was not at the show.

We viewed quite a few options around the show, with different responses as to strengths and perceived weaknesses.

We looked VERY seriously at both Kimberley Campers, and Complete Campsite, and reviewed the hard-floor and soft-floor options, reviewing the trade-offs between speed-of-setup, accommodation space and layout, storage space, towing weight, and size of "back-yard footprint" when not in use. Note: with out Prado full width door, a "Draw-Bar" extension of 250-300mm is mandatory.

We almost had the cheque book out for the KK first for its general reputation in the Camper Trailer community (although there were certainly enough complaints to hand via Google, about lack of response to customer issues), then the soft-floor options of the CC range had us feeling that the KK hard-floor options were positively claustrophobic.

It was the overall size and towing weight of these units that really, for us was the most serious tipping point, as storage of the unit for the 9-11 months? of the year is probably the 'forgotten' part of any purchase.

Missing from the above list was the range made by Ultimate Campers in Moruya, about 4 hours south of Sydney. They are a fibreglass unit with a sideways flipping bed (East-West), rather than the traditional "North-South" of say the KK and others. This sideways "flip" results in a larger King-Sized bed as standard, and the Fibreglass construction gives a rigid and lighter package that has been reported to be basically "dust-proof" (if there is such a thing?). There are 3 units from entry level "Xtrk", through "Xplor", and "X20".

At this stage we think we have found a unit that, whilst expensive, could be the base for our first Camper Trailer.

The quality and utility of the unit seems excellent, although the options pricing and detailing schedule is confusing to say the least.

            Thanks again to the group!

sorry, couldn't bring myself to read all 4 pages, however you say patriot with family pack was less than ideal, you need a small footprint when packed up a d something well built. Can i suggest you look at camprite campers.

They look good, and have been upgrading them each year. Is yours the current version?

Be good to hear a review from a real user with all the good and not so good features. Apart from the unknown problems in the early trip across the simpson (that apparently broke something that was never properly revealed) the only concern I have thought is that the weight of the unit is up high, especially when loaded up, making the centre of gravity high. On rough trails a bad bump might be a risk of tipping it over?

Certainly like the design of them. They are designed for outdoor camping, cooking and activities rather than some that feel more like a portable enclosed house. When we go outback we want to experience all of it, not hide away.

I would be keen to see some detail about how the Airbags work. Even better if you can give me details on max and min height on the airbags and the model numbers.

I am trying to fit them to my Dove at the moment with a custom 105 Series Front Radius arms 3 link setup.

I love the X1. Just way out of budget for us.

Wow. Well I have no idea what the part numbers are but I might be able to find them. We haven't done any tough tracked yet but although it seems tall all the weight is fairly low down. Ours is a Feb 17 model. At he moment after a few trips the only gripe I have is the fly screens don't have double zips. One opens away from the bed and one does so I hot my head when I go in. My fault more than anything.
Apart from that it's great. Build quality is great. No complaints. Getting the kids up properly was interesting the first few times but now it's a breeze.
I read up about the alleged drawbar issue and have not ever heard anything about it elsewhere. More reports as we use it more. 👍🏻

Drawbar extended so the rear door opens all the way?

Should be able to double zip the zips.

                            Hi Guys.

I see this old thread is still kicking around and people are still interested in hearing from ppl who own a patriot X1. I have an X1, the family model which we got in 2015 as part of the Xmas special from the all 4 adventure guys.
I can say that we are really happy with the trailer, we have done a couple of trips now and are due to head out to Lorella Springs in a couple of weeks.
what's happened so far> All that has ever gone wrong with the trailer itself was the lock on the fridge door broke and was promptly replaced by Patriot by sending me a new one in the mail. Really good service from them.
The only other thing that has broken has been the tent (flyscreen's zip broke away) but they even sorted that out for us and a bung fell out but that was my fault for not making sure everything was tight after driving off road.
Some of the things that I would change or move have already been don't such as having the new tent, the power inlet is now external. I would like to see some protection in the storage bins such as rubber or even the spray lining in the front bin so you don't have to worry about scratching all that nice paint off.

What I do like. its made on the gold coast from Aussie gear and the guys at patriot are really good to deal with. Its a beefy little unit and compact in size which makes it really easy to tow. There is plenty of storage for those that worry about that, we travel with three kids (Sometimes with the dogs too) and have no trouble fitting everything in that we need to go camping. (Some of the bulk stuff I cant fit but that's what a roof rack is for).
The bed is huge and the tent is really simple to set up quickly if you get into camp late.
I looked at a lot of different options before we saw the patriot and after looking over one knew that these were a great little unit. After having one for a while now I know why they keep winning camper trailer of the year.
If anyone wants any more details or photos happy to oblige.

It seems in this thread the people that have the Patriot are happy with it, and the after sales service as well, which is good to hear.
We are similar (2 adults/2 kids), after looking at countless options, both cheap and expensive, we have now narrowed it to a Patriot X1 tourer or a Camprite TL8, but have yet to decide, commit and follow through.....mmmm......the decisions.......might grab another coldie and think about it.
Friends of ours have 3 kids and just ordered a Rex F5A, interested to see the outcome, it is more expensive and a lot heavier than a Patriot or Camprite , but it has a lot of good points and should be a perfect fit for their 3 kids.
