yeah i just had to replace the alternator as well, but they said not to use the OEX DXA552 and sold me the OEX DXA553 something to do about the regulator and was $10 cheaper, all works fine easy change as long as you have a double length 14mm spanner for the belt

I went out playing in mud a few weeks ago including some muddy water. battery light came on - slowly over a few hours started failing - lights on dash etc. anyway no charge into batteries. Alternator seems stuffed. Is it something that can only be replaced by a mechanic? It looks like a tough spot under the AC compressor to get to. I can source a new alternator for $400 something wholesale (retail $700+) - through a friend. I'm thinking it's the clutch as the fan or whatever you call it only operates slowly for a bit, stops, starts.... when engine running.

If yo have a pressure washer try giving it a good squirt inside the alternator preferably with
the engine running but don't get caught in the moving parts.

thanks I'll give it another go. but has anyone replaced the alternator themselves? looks to be in a bugger of a position under the AC compressor. Do you have to come in from below - or mechanic only sort of repair?

Started the vehicle this morning and noticed it sounded a bit sluggish. Got home this evening and tried to start the car just after turning it off, nothing.

Grabbed the multimeter and the battery is showing 11.6v! Charged it up for a few hours and managed to start the vehicle, put the multimeter on the battery and only getting 11.7v. Still no warning lights though, strange that the battery light isn't on if the alternator isn't charging. Then again I only picked the vehicle up from Toyota two days ago after the last warranty item so nothing surprises me now!

I replaced my alternator last week after I found it to be dead. It's a fairly straight forward process and can be done by a backyard mechanic in a few hours. Just access it from behind the drivers side wheel, there's a small plastic soft guard covering access to the alternator, and just enough room to squeeze it through the chassis.

Took my vehicle to Toyota today, the rectifier had $hit itself! They showed the rectifier when I picked up the vehicle and it appears to have shorted out somehow and blown a little hole in itself!

Just had alternator replaced on my 3 years and 11 month old 150 Diesel auto GXL. Several lights came on. Eventually couldn't start it. RACV determined alternator faulty, Diode Open, whatever that means. RACV offered to replace it for $554. I chose to have it towed, at RACV's expense, to a repairer I knew. He charged me $723.50! Win some, lose some...New alternator $485, labour $172.73, GST 65.77.

I asked for the old alternator back and got it. Is there any value in it for me (or for the repairer)?
Is the clutch, that has been mentioned, inside the slotted pulley on the front?
Is it possible to get the alternator repaired/reconditioned for future use, as the diode going open was the diagnosis?

You might get $2 from a scrappy!

Take it to an autoelec and get them to diagnose it properly and quote on repair. If RACV are anything like RACQ I would be very surprised if they got the diagnosis correct. There are multiple reasons an alternator can stop charging, some cheap and some not worth fixing.

Hi folks and a very interesting read.

I have been researching alternator failures on Land Rovers and they seem to have a VERY high rate of alternator failures and while many get the battery light coming on, but this is usually only good for a short time.

There is no hope on earth of driving for two or three hours and then swapping batteries. Ten to twenty minutes seems to be the maximum drive time before you get a total system failure, resulting in a motor shutdown, steering failure, no brakes, you can’t even put the hazard lights on.

In quite a large number of cases, you get no warnings at all, just an instantaneous catastrophic system failure and you are stuck right where you stop.

Anyway, my reason for sticking my nose in your thread is to ask if any of these alternator failures have lead to an instantaneous total failure of your Toyotas?

No.... my ALT Clutch Pulley failed up at the Cape last year and just drove watching the Voltage level on my Scangauge. When it got down to what I thought was low enough, I'd stop and swap it out with my mates battery and off we go again for the next 2-3hrs and do it all over again.... did this for 2 days to get us back to Mossman where the Auto Elect installed a Aftermarket one.....

BTW: I had also been reading about the ALT failure in the Disco-3 and D4..... not good or safe..... Hope they sort it out as they are a really nice car.....
Is there any solutions (factory or aftermarket??)

Repco were advertising a brand new alternator for the D4D (120) for $300. I don't know if they suit the 150 or if you could buy one to suit for the same price from Repco.
