From what the Auto-Elect was telling me, the same ALT is the same for all D4d vehicles in the Prados......

Mine just went last night, thankfully I was close to home not in the outback.
Don't know if the alternator or the clutch pulley is the problem yet waiting on call to say it is fixed.
They haven't had a Prado yet but several Hi Lux's that share the same alternator.
            Mine did 162000 before failing

I just had my alternator let go last week. It was also the clutch that failed. I figured there was a problem before the battery light came on because it was making a high pitch whirring noise which i thought was the belt. $762 for OEM Denso alternator plus $196 labour to have it replaced.

Today i had to get my starter motor replaced because it had also died. $380 for aftermarket starter (oem was almost $800) plus $80 labour.

The mechanic showed me the alternator and said that there was heap of grit inside it. Prado has just passed 160 000kms and has been put through a lot of muddy/salty/sandy water crossings. I'm actually surprised nothing let go sooner.

Well, we did the Cape last September...got back into Cairns, and she died...Luckily we were comfortably accomodated at the Cairns Coconut, but RACQ mechanic found same issue - none in the country and facing a 3-4 week wait time from Japan - Who'd have thought there'd be two different types as well just to compound the issue (dual A/C, etc) - In the end, I rang around and found one in Smithfield NSW at a wreckers - had it trucked up overnight and fitted following afternoon...Either it was just its time (Petrol V6 with 165000 on the clock) or Nolans and the corrugations contributed to a slow demise...

Well it seems mine may be starting to have issues. The battery light came on last week on the freeway and then went out 10 mins later by itself. It occurred on Friday again and I pulled over, switched off and restarted with no light. Scan gauge still shows between 13.4-14.4v, so a little weird. We are heading to Undarra and Cairns on the school hols and I'm a little concerned.

Thanks to the guys that posted the 100 & 130 amp part numbers.

                    Cheers

Interesting. I too have a high pitch noise at idle which goes away immediately if you turn the A/C off. I've also had the alternator light come on a couple of times over the last couple of months but only for a few seconds. Wondering if it's just the clutch. The vehicle has 102,000km on it.

Driving on K.I and lights on dash flashing and Radio /sat nav went blank, ABS Traction control lights on Battery light on, losing power thinking it was the battery failing but with fuses and such fine seamed to think that alt has gone awaiting confirmation, 60000klm 4.7years old.
expecting $600 to 750 for Alt and couple of hours to fix.

Had a new aftermarket unit fitted unit $470.00 pluss $260.00 fitting, the clutch unit was fine.
removed air filter top and bottom sections and air intercooler line and fitted that way.

My alternator just died, only 80000 on the clock! Came back after 3 weeks away and battery light came on when it started. Luckily covered by extended warranty.

I bet u its the Clutch Pulley on the ALT that failed and not the ALT itself..... This seems to be a fairly common problem now.....

The clutch pulley on our replacement 130 amp denso failed before 30000 km. The replacement ones are between $100 and $200 and that is just the pulley. Only paid $400 for the alternator new.

                                Arggggggggggg.
