  • Light bar and go-pro

I had this past on to me today. Looks great but at what cost? But I want one.

Rigid Industries showed a working prototype of a traditional LED light bar that houses a GoPro camera in the center.
The Capture GoPro Light Bar is a 10-inch light bar with a waterproof cubby in the middle that connects the GoPro (removable) to power. There’s a snap in cover to protect the camera.
It was shown with a Hero 3+ GoPro, that is trickle charged while the vehicle is running so users can record their off-road or on-road adventures even at night.
Rigid believes it is the first to offer the combination light bar/GoPro.
The Capture should be available in early 2015 in two versions, one with the GoPro included and one without.
The dual row light bar uses Rigid’s radius housing technology for a greater light spread.
It won a Show Stopper Award from Diesel Tech magazine.

Hmm all that clear plastic would surely get some reflection or light pipe leakage to the camera lens I would think?

Expensive for what it is. But the idea of being powered is interesting. Might be ok for professional off-roaders/racers but for the recreational users like me who would only use it 5-10% of the time it's probably a bit much.

You wouldn't use that much footage from a single point camera on a run. If it's mounted to the bullbar, the images would be a little boring as there's no reference point, not to mention the swimming effect from the vibration that I get from mounting mine to the bullbar. I also get bored of the single perspective vids. Might be better roof mounted as you'd get some of the vehicle in and maybe less vibrations?

It might be ok if you've got more than one gopro but I can't affford more than one gopro so I'm always swapping mine around to various locations. A few roll bar mounts are cheaper than a light bar

Hey I got that effect too. Thought it was a heat thing as my imitation go pro was only $60.
I mount mine on the roof rack now, much better vision. Even with the light bar on.

Try increasing the Frames per second if you can. With my GP2 its much less noticeable at 720p 60fps. I just don't mount mine to the bulbar and I don't have the problem anymore. Bloody diesel vibration

Go Pro's as they overclock the processor run inherently Hot as well. Then shut down. I can see some heat issues with this lightbar setup that would possibly become a nuisance.

Don't take it too badly. Topgear, with all the millions they spend and all the technology and expertise they have, still get the same effect but nowhere near as badly.

Then again, they tend to drive very well balanced petrol vehicles with almost no vibration and no bull bars.

Would your front shots be better mounting the camera on the bonnet or maybe the guard where there is significantly less vibration?

Looks like it's the vibration reduction trying to do its best to smooth out the image. I guess the algorithms is not suited for bullbar mounted applications on diesels.

I think it is fantastic how well the image stabilisation does under most circumstances.

Not much is suited to bulbar vibration.

Just look at how long a ground independent CB antenna survives on a vibrating bull bar compared to how long the same antenna lasts on a Z bracket on the front guard.

                  Cheers,

Yeah - I don't mount to the bulbar at all now, it only really happens at idle anyway. I have a dash cam for front facing and then use a suction mount and the roll cage mounts for other angles

Its a common problem - the drone guys see it a lot. Its called the Jello effect (officially Rolling shutter)- there's some info here on it for anyone who cares: http://www.flitetest.com/articles/vi...uses-and-cures

But its why fitting a camera to a LED bar to a bulbar prob isn't a great idea unless there is some serious damping going on.

Thanks for the link. Very educational.
So if a CCD action camera exists, that would be the way to go. Or a camera mounted to the windscreen or roofrack.

I looked back at footage of my Panasonic LX3 (which has a CCD sensor) strapped to the bullbar. No jello effect on the footage.
