  • Rhino Rack question

    Hi guys,

THinking of getting a rhino rack. I want the Pioneer tradie on my Prado 120, 2008 model. It has the rails.

If I jump on Rhino's website and choose prado without roof rails, it allows me to choose this rack. If I choose the model with rails, which is what I have, I don't have this option available.

From what I have seen though, I think people remove the rails correct? Is it possible to have the Pioneer tradie on my prado?

What are the cons and pro's? Was reading older threads about extra noise and shopping centres etc. But also read they are easy to remove?

    Thanks guys

Just went through same process, although on my 150, where I fitted the platform after removing rails. Removing rails allows extra weight to be carried as you probably read in threads and probably drops the height a fraction if you're worried about shopping centres. I hadn't noticed any extra noise (maybe my music is too loud)... Easy to remove if you wanted too as only 6 bolts.

I have just put a pioneer platform on my Prado 120 and love it. I got rid of the rails as I had read the load carrying capacity goes from 80-100kg by doing so. I bought a full rhino platform package which includes the feet once the side rails are removed. It is definitely possible to have the pioneer tradie on your 120 but I don't think it can be done with the rails (someone else may be able to confirm this for you). Removing the existing side rails is a quick job though.

The actual platforms weigh about 20kgs so nice and lite for two people to remove and only takes about 10 minutes to take it off. I chose the platform instead of the tradie for two reasons: the car park reason and I didn't think extra cost of side rails provided any benefit as items could be secured to the platform with eyebolts if necessary (which is what I have done). Works a treat for me carrying the oztent

      Good luck

Thanks for the feedback guys! I am happy to remove my side rails and get one of these platforms, but I just like the look of the Pioneer Tradie more. No big deal though, I can fit the other version if I have to and buy the side rails for that.

I want it mainly for my tent and max trax! That is all, and also run an LEd bar at the front! Will save with room in the car, make room for a fridge

With the Pioneer Platform you can mount Maxtrax on a set of Craig's TraxRax without having the side rails in place. I have purchased the front rail kit for mine but won't bother with the side rails, the eyebolts do the job there. I have a 150 and have my platform mounted to the factory rails, no issues to report there.

I went for the Pioneer Platform for the same reason as Retreads, car park clearance.

definitely the pioneer, looks good on the prado's. i went for a little more custom to get both the usable aspect and also the looks. i cut mine down a bit length and width then used ARB rack mounts from their steel rack to then mount the pioneer to. not exactly removable friendly but then once on i not keen to muck around taking on and off. end result about 15 to 20mm lower than rhino mount version and the full mount look of the arb looks trick. low tucked in fit for the awning also a winner for me. best part is they allow mounting of virtually anything on top in any configuration to suit.
so it all depends how you want to set yours up and what gear you want mounted to it to suit your needs.

I went for the pioneer platform, mostly because the guy at ARB talked up the rhino over the ARB alloy rack. Also height was a consideration. I did buy the add on side rails against his advice and have since removed them. They make adding and changing accessories on the outside tracks difficult and dont really offer any advantage. Especially since I started using the Rhino rapid straps, basically i just loop these around the load and the rack, has worked fine so far. Quick and easy.

Yep I went the flat tray (no sides) on the factory rails and I still get into the garage fine. I didn't see any good reason for the sides as I use the eyebolts for tie down and they work fine.Click image for larger version

Another vote for the flat platform. I prefer its flexibility. And if I need sides I can add them later but never felt a need for them.

Hey Craig I have the same MaxTrax holders I think. What brand are they? I only ask as I want something to hold my shovel also.

TraxRax are the brackets. I use QuickFists to secure my shovel.
