  • 235/85/16 Vs 265/75/16 MT Tyres

    Hey Lads,

So I've been searching the internet like crazy but I can't find a thread with a decent discussion on the merits of 235/85/16 Vs 265/75/16 MT Tyres for off road performance.

If there is such a thread, please share the link with me and apologies for starting a new thread.

I'm trying to decide which tyre size to go for on my 90 series V6 auto GLX. I would love a discussion and your opinions on the benefits/draw backs of each tyre.

Some people reckon the slimmer tyres are better in the mud because they sink down and bite into the harder stuff. Has anyone ran both sets and have an educated opinion on that theory? Also what about other surfaces and conditions, do either size have clear benefits?

Depending on tyre brand, the 235 and 265 are pretty much the same hight. Some brands (Bridgestone Deuler) have a few extra mm OD when you go with the 235.

A main concern is, are there any drawback to losing that inch of width? stability compromised? or anything else?

An obvious benefit is that the 235 are cheaper by about $150 bucks depending on brand (for 5 tyres). They also seem to have better on road fuel consumption.

From my research its clear that most people run the 265/75/16 size. Its a very common size so will be easily available out bush, this could be a big reason why people run this size?

    What do you reckon guys?

Personally, I'd go the 235/85/16. When u let them down u get a good foot print length ways instead of width which can be an advantage at times..... I remember travelling out west when it was muddy conditions, those vehicles that had wide tyres had issues with their guards filling up with mud to the point that it hindered their steering, those that had the 235 had no issues

I agree with my friends here, 235/85 is the best in almost all situations. As already mentioned, they bag out in the correct fashion without exposing the sidewalls to damage like the fat tyres do, and they are a lot cheaper, more fuel efficient, as well as usually being LT 10 ply as standard. In the '70s we used to get around Fraser Is quite happily with standard RTMs on Cruiser wagons, and they were an even narrower profile than these.
The only reason I see for using a wide tyre is for the "tough looking truck" factor, usually combined with a ridiculous 5" lift and wallowing ride.
        cheers
        Steve

Thanks guys, appropriate the advice. I'm strongly leaning in the direction of the 235 now.

I'm far more concerned with performance over looks. I love the reaction I get from others on the tracks when they see my 90s tackle almost every track that they can in their fairly heavily modded full size trucks (patrols, cruisers etc). They literally cant believe it! This is with road tires and currently stock suspension!

This month when the tires and lift are fitted they will be in real trouble of being shown up

If you really want to improve the show, fit an e-locker to the rear and you can just idle over most things.

Yea, I've got my eye on a rear auto Lokka very shortly. Would love the elocker but the price difference is just to large. My 90 isn't my daily driver so I don't really mind some slight changes to onroad manners.
I do think il go elocker in the front diff when the time comes but there are a few other mods on the Wishlist first.
The rear Lokka should keep me going for a while.

Does anyone know, from a legal standpoint, will the Prado pass RWC in Victoria with either 265/75/16 or 235/85/16??
