  • Programming a spare key, new owner

EDIT: I've figured it all out, I added the how-to in post #10. hope it helps

    Hi guys,

First time poster, I bought my 07' GXL 120 D4D series a couple weeks back. Very happy with it, haven't had much time to do anything serious yet. This is the first thing I want to get out of the way.

When I bought the vehicle, it only has the 1 key with the buttons, and another key (no buttons) that for some unbeknownst reason, has a nut and bolt screwed through it. The previous owner said it was to short something out.... hmkay... (any insight on this would be handy too)

My first question is, Do I need a so-called 'master key' to program a blank key from ebay? or will my existing key be a master? i don't know what a master key is exactly, my yamaha bike has a red 'master' key.

So What I would like to do is buy another (maybe 2) button-integrated keys from ebay, or wherever is recommended (any advice here would be great too). And program them to be spares. I really dont like the idea of only having one good key.

I've seen the procedure videos and threads on here re: door opening closing, on off ignition etc etc. But do you need a special key to do this procedure in the first place? Or will my existing button-key work fine?

PS I realise I'll have to get the key cut also.
PPS A proper introduction will come soon I promise.

Thanks mate, I saw that thread. I've since gone and ordered a key with the appropriate transponder code. Hopefully I have no drama with the 2 procedures.

Good luck. I did this last year. I paid $80 though for the key and chip and then programmed it myself.

I had to open the drivers door a few times. Became a master after a while!

The bolt through the key is bad.... theres a very small chip inside it that would smash if it were drilled
the central locking and immobilizer are completely seperate things so that will need seperate programing
a wild guess but the plain key you have is probly grey ? If so that is a Valet key. I believe these cannot be copied through the car (lock smith maybe) this is so if the valet driver trys to copy the key he cant
Your main key with the buttons on it will be able to be copied have it cut from the key number or vin NOT direct mimic copy as they wear then go through the Add keys to the immobilizer and it should work bear in mind that there are a few different versions out there being different models
keep searching the net if it dosnt work first time

I paid a little more than 80 (130) I saw the cheaper ones on ebay but wasnt too thrilled with their descriptions, they basically said you could only program the remote yourself and not the immobiliser portion. If this goes all okay, ill go buy a 2nd cheaper key and see how it goes. I did make sure I got a key with the same part number/code written on the remote.

Scott, I agree about the small bolt, it is really bizzare. Its not any 'grey-er' than the other keys its just very strange. I think they intended to destroy the circuit intentionally, must have been a special sort of person to do that.

As for the key cutting, VERY good point. I dont have the key numbers though. You mention VIN number... who would I take this to get cut? I was just going to do a copy key through mister minute or the like. would it be more expensive your way?

I have a 120 series ecu in mine and had to start from scratch (new immob ecu) was very easy to do the immobilizer coding
Getting the keys cut (genuine toyota keys) i took them to a good lock smith not your average one in the shops or bunnings were about 25 each my key number was in the owners manual but have a good look around the car 4 digit mine otherwise toyota should be able to give you it but then they might want to do the job

Well I got the key in the mail. Glad I paid a little more and got the full procedure. The transpoder program is not like I found anywhere here.

Toyota gave me the key codes for cutting based on VIN no worries.

I'll cut the keys today, ordered a third key with the updated button-flick design today.
I'll upload the pdf procedures when I jump on the pc next

                    How to program your keys!

Well the pdf was too big to attach (grr) so I am typing out the instructions for anyone who needs it....

Note: You MUST buy a key that has a matched code printed on the remote. Open up your key and take out the small rectangular remote transponder and it is printed on it, mine was 50171. Your new spare key must match it... eBay sellers do mention what code they are, if they are not telling you... dont buy from them!!

You need a master key for this procedure
What is a master key? ANY working key with a remote in it. Including copies... I had 1 key with remote, now I have 3, each time copying a different key... (copy of a copy)

IMMOBILISER PROGRAMMING (make car recognise key, so you can start the engine)

                    1. Close drivers door
                    2. After 10 seconds, insert an already registered key into the ignition. The security indicator should now be turned off.
**you have 3 seconds to begin step 3.
                    3. Remove and insert the already registered key 4 times in 10 seconds.
                    4. Open and close drivers door 6 times within 20 seconds.
                    5. Remove the already registered key.
                    6. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key to be registered ( security indicator should be flashing again), and leave it for 60 seconds in the ignition, the security indicator should stop flashing.
                    7. The new key is now registered to the car

REMOTE PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS (For the buttons on your key to unlock the doors)

                    1. Drivers door open and key removed from ignition switch
                    2. Insert key into ignition swithc, then remove it TWICE
                    3. Within 40 seconds, close and open drivers door TWICE
                    4. Insert key into ignition switch, then remove it
                    5. Within 40 seconds, Close and open drivers door TWICE
                    6. Close drivers door
                    7. Insert key into ignition
                    8. Switch ignition "ON" for 2 seconds, then "OFF"
                    9. Remove key
                    10. Computer should now lock and unlock vehicle to indicate you are in programming mode
                    11. Carry out the following within 20 seconds: Simultaneously press and hold lock and unlock buttons until the light on the key remote flashes once
                    12. Press and hold lock button until light on remote flashes twice.
                    13. System should now lock and unlock vehicle
NOTE: If system locks and unlocks vehicle twice, programming has not been successful. Vehicle is STILL in programming mode, so repeat the button procedure from step 11
                    14. To exit programming mode after key has been programmed, open drivers door.

                    DONE!

Hope this helps someone, it sure helped me. I now have 2 standard keys and 1 'flip-out' key.

I cant get the immobiliser side of the key to work, another site says to turn the key from off to on in the last stage to register it, other guides say dont turn it .
                      Any clues?

that is a good question amts, the seller says there is, it is a clear case so i should be able to see it, i have the number of a mobile auto lock smith who i will most likely use. My mechanic told me to try the foot pedal method but that didnt work either.

The locksmith i took it to said the key reads ok when he puts it in the reader but my car wont accept it. It is the 50171 transponder and the central locking programmed fine.
The locksmith also cleared the ecu of all keys and re tried but still no luck, i did read somewhere on here that they left the key in the ignition programming phase overnight, to get it to register?

I only have a black key and no remote. Do I have to go to Toyota to get a remote sorted out?

                              Cheers
