  • Lets talk seats

    Hey guys,

We have had our Prado for nearly a year now and haven't been at all impressed by the seats. Firstly the material is shocking for dirt and dog hair. (WTF toyota???). We have tried seat covers to some avail but not much.

Our last car was a Freelander 2. and OMG that was a comfortable car.

Basically we want to improve the seats in the Prado.

The main options i can think of are:
    1. Reupholstering the seats in leather
    2. Replacing the seats. Possibly with landrover seats.

Can you guys tell me about feasibility/possibility of both options.

FYI I'm talking front and middle row.

    Thanks, Harry

Airbag seats will limit your options. Reupholstering probably the best solution.

Yep. Standard Toyota seats suck. I had Recaros in my 120 and one of the reasons I bought a 100 series and not a 200 series was so I could move the Recaros to the new vehicle.

What about tracking down a leather interior from a wrecked vehicle?

            +1 for recaro.

Not sure if they will be suitable for the airbag issue.

Though, I haven't really had any issues with my 150 seats. Except the Lumbar support squeaks on rough roads if you have it out too far.

Ive got neoprene seat covers (airbag compliant) and work fine with animals etc. Easily washable and no worries with anything wet. Got supertrim ones and fit really well. Easy to install

Recaros for the front, but what options are available for the back?

We currently have neoprene covers, and they're good and all, but once you go leather you can't go back...

Yeah, looking for a wrecked Discovery 3 / 4 because i know that those seats are comfy... would they fit? Or are the toyota leather seats from the VX or Kakadu more
                conformable than the GXL seats?

I know you are over seat covers but these are extremely good are are local to you (and me).

They have just released Denim which don't get as hot as canvas in the summer and are very good fitting and comfy.

                    Denim seat covers sound nice.

Still, are the leather rear Prado seats more comfy than the non-leather?

Your best bet, if money was no object, and this is just my oppinion.

Recaro front seats, I'm sure Ideal Seat Company has airbag solutions from the conversation I remember having with them at a show somewhere. Get them in leather if you want leather, if not whatever.

Once the fronts are fitted take the vehicle to a good vehicle trimmer and get them to reshape the existing rear seat to what you want, then retrim it to match the front seats.

If you are fussy like me you may also want to get the third row done the same to match and the door trim inserts also done to match.

Like I said, money no object because I'm guessing it would be upwards of $6k for this! But it would be the best option in my opinion.

Not really sure how you would go getting disco seats to fit, I'm sure the fronts could be done with a bit of work but the rears would be a right pain if not impossible I recon.

Wow, now thats an idea. :O

But probably a bit out of the price range willing to be spent.

Most likely going to get Recaro fronts and reupholster the rest in leather.

                        Thanks guy

Most of the money is in the Recaros and the retrimming, actually reshaping the foam in the rear seat would not be much more expensive than just a plain retrim. If you are going to keep the car for a while I would say spend the coin, everyone spends money getting the outside looking good but you spend most of the time sitting in your beast, not standing looking at it.
