Cool.... Added some more to the list for Tassie.....

Cradle Mtn is a beautiful spot, but I might leave that off the list atm as u said... blacktop all the way. Some day in the near future hoping to take the family there....

As for Iconic locations, Cradle Mountain and Lake Saint Claire would be a couple of Iconic spots on the South Isle, both accessible by Bitumen though.

      Cheers Andrew

Can personally vouch for this one; great beach driving, sand tracks, dynamic scenery (from desert, bush to almost rain forest all on the one island). If you are lucky you will also catch glimpses of whales and dolphins close to the shore. It is a very well rounded package. Just keep an eye on the tide times. Most tracks are easy, few would be moderate... If you use common, highly unlikely to get in any trouble We just came from Moreton this weekend, would definitely go there again...

The Butchers track in WA is basically just a dirt rd linking Shark Bay to Murchison. Good short cut through station country. I wouldn't call it an iconic track.
                    Can't we just keep travelling?

Alice to Marble Bar via Gary Junction road with a side trip down and back up through Finke Gorge. Great trip which leads you into the Pilbara/west coast. Doable with a camper or off road van.
                      Googs Track in SA.
