  • Dual Battery Install, 12v fridge outlet and power to roof rack. (150 series)

For anyone interested to install a dual battery system in a 150 series Prado and run a cable to the back and up to the roof rack to supply camp lights, 12v fridges etc please follow the link to my YouTube clip that explains most of the How To and install. I also replaced my alternator sense fuse to increase the charge voltage with 0.6v and got it to charge at 14.2v. Hope this can assist someone that wants to do the same...

    Hi Pie eater,
Watched your little video that would be beyond me, but I did put red ark solenoid and second battery , also Anderson plug with 6b&s wire just thinking where to put my Engle connection, did you just take your wire out of the Anderson and solder into the 6b&s for your feed into the compartment on the LHS ? Saves running again from auxiliary battery.and where did you get your little fuse block from.
Cheers for the info , Alan

Nice little video...I haven't the time nor patience to make an instructional video, but I like the concept!.

Was the 6.5m 6B&S just enough or did you have some slack in the line?

        Hi Dabeanian,

Yeah mate you only need to connect the 6mm twin core cable on the back of the anderson onto the 6b&s cable and run it into the back of the prado. (Assuming you have a anderson fitted to your tow bar that are powered from th aux battery) You can drill through the bottom or get access from the left below the jack. There is one way rubber vents in that area. Then terminate the 6mm cable on another anderson connector for your fridge. Your fridge should have a built in fuse. You can get the fuse block from Jaycar or any auto electrical shop. If you are only fitting the one connector for the fridge just use a inline blade fuse. Let me know if you need better pictures.

          Hi Spilsy,

6.5m was just enough to go from the aux battery to the towbar but there is no room for error. Buy 7 m and it will be enough. Go for twin core and run your negative cable aswell. Dont use the chassis as earth. If you run it on the left you can use the fuel hoses to tie the cable to and as a guide of where to run it.

            Hi Pie Eater,
Thanks for the info, I have a spare Anderson plug and can JUST get the 6b&s and the 6 mm in the connectors and crimp,
Can run the wire into the little cubby might leave the socket for the Engle on the inside towards the rear and just run the cable in and close it on the Engle wire ,then the plug isn't sticking out into the car,
            Cheers for that Alan.

              Hello Pie Eater,

I left this comment on your YouTube post but will repeat here too just to see if you (or others) have comments on locating the Redarc on the left or right side of the car.

Nice clear instructions thanks. I'm about to install a 2nd battery in my Prado so will find this helpful. One query you may like to comment on is the location of the Redarc Isolator... their instruction say to mount it close to the main battery to avoid cycling due to excessive voltage loss in the cable... I notice you (and many others) mount it on the right hand side of the car but I'm assuming the large cable size negates any voltage drop issues... have you had any problems with the Redarc cycling?

If you like you can mount it closer to the main battery but due to the short distance and the thickness of the cable there is no voltage drop that could cause cycling. Mounting it close to the aux battery makes it easy to mount as you could weld a tab onto the tray to mount the isolator. Also if you connect it on the drivers side it is a shorter distance if you want to run a cable inside to mount a LED to indicate when the isolator is on or to mount a pushbutton. On the other hand if you mount the isolator on the passenger side close to the main batter and you want to run cable to the rear of the prado you wont have to run the cable across the engine again, like i did, to go to the back as you will be able to connect it onto the aux terminal side of the isolator and run it passed the main battery and down the fuel hoses to the back.
