  • HELP: Stuck in Weipa with dead starter motor

    Hi all,

I'm travelling up to Cape York with a mate of mine and our families. I'm in a 2014 150 series and my mate's in a 2004 120 series petrol.

Back in Archer River, his car wouldn't start, not so much as a crank. We're pretty sure we've isolated it to the starter motor and I've been tow starting him ever since.

We're now in Weipa and are waiting for the auto shop to open here tomorrow morning at 7am. I'm basically posting here in the hope that maybe a PP member out there has a spare starter for a 2004 120 petrol or knows if they're an easy part to get up here?

Any help in any way would be much appreciated. Also, if knows how big a job it is (in terms of labour) to replace a starter that'd be helpful too as we're trying to figure out how long we'll be stuck here. I know in the 90 series petrol it's a pretty big job.

    Thanks in advance.
    Derek

Can't help you with finding one but I had a 2004 diesel starter motor replaced in Port Hedland a couple of years ago. Couldn't get Toyota to help out but a local spare parts place had one. Took a local mechanic about 45 minutes to change it over.

    Good luck with it.

Thanks @abcxyz. That brings us a little hope! Hopefully the starter motor is as simple for the 120 petrol

Found a post from @foxclan from a couple of months ago talking about removing his 120 series v6 starter motor:

"So after disconnecting the battery, removing the left front wheel and taking the plastic skirt off the guard the starter was un bolted."

Sounds like a couple more steps, but nothing too complicated.

Again, hope you have luck sourcing one tomorrow. I was travelling with the family and stuck at 80 mile beach when mine gave up. Spent the whole day travelling to/from Port Hedland to get mine replaced. Just don't ask what the change-over cost will be from your local mechanic when you get home! You pay for convenience when you're remote!

If your handy with a spanner have a look at this thread. http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...h-lots-of-pics even thou its for a diesel, its pretty much the same, might be able to fix it yourself.

Also double check it is the starter motor before replacing it, could be a broken wire or a blow fuse, would hate for you to buy a new starter and bolt it in to find you are still in the same situation. If you have a test light that would be the best way to determine if you have power at the starter motor and then you can rule out wiring etc.

          Cheers Joel

Thanks guys. It's at the mechanic now they're taking a look at it and hopefully it'll be sorted today.

                Hi guys,

Sorry for the delayed response. We've been out of range for the past 5 days.

Starter motor ended up getting replaced and fitted within 3 hours. Cost $750 for the entire job though! And my mate forgot to ask for the old motor to take home and recon.

Anyway, alls well that ends well. It would seem that they have all sorts of Toyota spares up this way which makes sense since just about every truck you see is a Toyo.

                Thanks for your responses.
