  • Removing starter motor solenoid actual cable connector

    Hi guys,
I was working with a mate of mine today, trying to pull the starter motor out of my 2003 Prado 120 series 1KZ-TE. However, I'm damned if I could remove the connector going to the solenoid actuator! I've trawled throughout the internet, and seen really good photos of how to strip down the whole unit. But alas, I haven't been able to uncover how to remove the bloody connector. Obviously lots of people do it, and it can't be all that hard, but I just can't find any plastic bits to squeeze to release the connector. If anyone has any tips/photos, let me know. I actually had my mate take photos of the connector, but I haven't got them yet (may post later).

    Regards,

    Stuart

You are on the right track Stuart
And yes the connector is a bugger to remove.
There is by memory some prongs' that need to be pushed down to allow the two parts to separate. Then it still may need some leverage with a blade screw driver to gently pry the thing apart.
See if you can find a similar looking connector in a more accessible spot as most Toyota cable connections have a fail safe plug. You might then be able to get the gist of how it could be released.
    Cheers

Hi Troy. We did in fact have a look around the engine bay to see if we could find a similar looking, but more accessible connector, but didn't think there was anything to compare with. I'll have a closer look though, because there must some connector somewhere that uses the same principal.

          Hey there.
I'm in the process of trying to replace my starter as well. Any info on how to remove that pesky connector?
          Cheers,
          Blucifer

Hi Blucifer(?). Since the above was posted, my starter began to work again, which reduced the priority of stripping the starter motor. So I've yet to do it! If/when I do, I'll relay further details, but it may be a while...
