  • White smoke on cold start-2004 TD

    Hello All,
I am a newbie to Prado point and have few issues with my 2004 TD prado.
It blows white smoke in cold start approximately for a minute then all good.(Started before a week)
    Things tried.
    1) New fuel, air and oil filter
    2) New set of glow plugs
    3) Coolent looks good and no oil consumption at all!
    4) Some times it feels like a misfire on start but not every time

    a)Any advice greatly appreciated
    b) any good reliable diesel mechanic around spring field/Augustine heights area?(4300)

    Thanks all for the help.

Is it using any coolant at all? Has it got hot or does it get warm? Possible head problem, not that uncommon with the 1KZ. Mind you that is an over the Internet diagnosis and my be far from the problem. Maybe a bit of history, how long have you owned the vehicle? How long has it been doing it? Is it hard to start ever?

Bought it recently.(last feb).Untill last week every thing was fine.
It is not using any coolant at all. Temperature looks alright and sits below half all the time.
      No issues with starting too!!

How many klm's ? It's probably worn rings. If it clears quickly that's good, if it continues, that's not so good

Good issue for proud 1kzTE owners - maybe a good idea for a forum topic for this model

Exactly the same vehicle. Mine has just done 330,000 ks. No probs with car. No water or oil used and keeps cool at half point temp gauge constantly. Sluggish until warm and then ok. Overall a little bit down on power compared to around five years ago. But no bother. I definitely won't get the exhaust upgrade , i plan to nurse the motor for hopefully another 170,000 ks.
          Bloody reliable beasts.
Plan to check the guards for cracking cause she is heavy - but I do not tow on our yearly 6000 ks desert trips.

Oiled her today. New oil is like a magnificent tune up. Now ready to go to flinders ranges in June..
I reckon some worn rings is the issue. I wonder what ants thinks.

Would be good to get this or a dedicated thread going now there is some 300ks plus <2005 Prado's out their. Maybe a forum for these pre d4d models. (Especially 1kzte models). D4D's tend to dominate the 120 forums especially where forum members fail to put there motor type or year in their signatures- bloody frustrating at times. Especially in the what did you do to your 120 today forum.

Anyone interested? I'm willing to get some discussions going!

              Hi,

my 2005 HDJ 100 started to blow out a dense cloud of white smoke sometimes. It was always during a cold start, lasting about half a minute. Months later the turbo went out. It seems that oil was passing through the turbo burning at cold starts.

              Good luck
