  • Prado 150 Facelift GXL DRL mod

Hi, I decided today I would try to change the way my Prado always has the headlights on due to Toyota using the low beams for drl.
The issue I have with it is, that 70-80% of most peoples driving is done during the day time. In 6 months I had gone through a set of after market lamps. I do realise that visibility is a big safety factor and in saying that I have ordered a set of Narva 225 Ultima 50W HID lights which come with the drl LED's on the top of the light housing.

So this is what I did.
Firstly I realised the dash illumination lamps are only on when the headlight switch is in "Park" or "ON". So I picked up the dash illumination feed from under the dash on the right hand side behind the switch panel. This dash illumination feed would operate two SY4046 SPDT relays which I purchased from Jaycar. These relays have a normally open and a normally closed contact. The low beam wire at the back of the lights will be cut and the feed side connected to the common contact. The wire heading to the headlight connector is connected to the normally open contact. So when the dash lights are not on, the low beam power feed is interrupted but power is available at the normally closed contact which I will feed the LED drl on the new Narva's.

Connected a 2 core cable to the Green+ and White/Black- (the two centre wires on the plug) and run the cable through the firewall around to both low beam headlight connectors.

The relays can then be taped to the wiring harness as they are very light and are encapsulated so no need to worry about water ingress.

Yeah I didn't want to put mine in the park position with the tail lights on and the dimming of the reverse camera and stereo. This way I can run the leds on the new spotties as the day time running lights.

I am limited to 5 photos per post so I'll put up a wiring diagram tonight.
Hey mate have you had time to do up a wiring diagram ? Very interested as I hate the idea of low beam running all the time.

                  Hi Maddi.

I have been thinking of doing exactly the same mod in the same way. Even got a set of H8/H9/H11 Relay Harness Socket Wiring Cable Light Lamp Connector Plug Adaptors off E-Bay to wire the relays into and plug onto the existing headlight harness. Plus I am still looking for some white LEDS maybe a strip that will fit around the teardrop part of the headlights (just like a Kakado) to wire off the normally open sides of the relays. Have already changed my front parkers to LEDs. and they are a big improvement - probably enought as DRL's in their own right already.

Would be interested in hear what wire you picked up behind the dash, I expect is the positive feed to the dash illumination lights at the dash light dimming switch.

Doesn't this still leave your tail lights / number plate lights / front parkers / and the little green headlight on indicator in the instrument cluster all on?

Hang on, 2014 models onwards headlights and all packers are on all the time. Not just when the switch is turned. They only other condition is all packers on and headlights off.

Where did the OP get the idea the rear packers are ever off ? Also, my Orem bulbs are two years old and still working fine. Why would you go aftermarket if the blow every six months!

Symo, I don't recall saying every 6 months, happened once.
Now not sure if you're trying to say OSRAM or OEM? but I changed to Philips Diamond Vision lamps because the OEM lamps are pathetic. May have been a crook lamp, but it doesn't change the fact that I don't want to run low beams all the time. I travel approx 900 k's per week. So say conservatively 11 hours of driving (90% day time) that would equate to around 500 hours/year of running headlights for no reason. Just a piss poor after thought from Toyota.

The reason the OEM lamps probably last a long time is that they are probably over rated. For instance actual rating is likely around a 16 volt lamp. That would explain the Dolphin torch like output. But yes there is a trade off for higher performing lamps as they are worked harder. More reason this modification (to me) is worth it. Two relays and a bit of wire ($16). Pretty simple really.

                            Prado lamp switch (original):
OFF (vehicle running) - Low beams, parkers and tail lights on. Dash illumination off.
PARK - Parkers, tail lights and dash illumination on.
ON - Low beam, parkers, tail lights and dash illumination on.

                            Prado lamp switch (now):
OFF (vehicle running) - Parkers, Narva Ultima 225 LEDs and tail lights on. Low beam and dash illumination off.
PARK - Parkers, tail lights and dash illumination on.
ON - Low beam, parkers, tail lights and dash illumination on.

My mistake when I said "picked up tail light feed". Should be dash illumination feed. I had also looked at the tail lights in the sun and they didn't look like they were on but you're correct about them being on all the time.

Ahh no. Safety. With all that driving you do you'd think you'd have noticed how hard some cars are to see coming even in the daytime.
Hopefully your mod doesn't kill yourself or anyone else.
