I did this today and am happy with results.
When engine on dash is bright and parkers and DRL are on.

Switch to Parkers, the dash lights dim and parkers and DRL.

Switch to headlights and the dash lights dim and the parkers, DRL and headlights on.

Just like a normal car.

Oh what a feeling...........

Prado 150 Facelift GXL DRL mod

Unscientifically I have never been pulled out in front of since having the lights on, and no one has accidentally tried an overtaking manoeuvre in front me either.

Seemed to happen a lot in the Patrol and it was big and bright colour. Not dark grey like the Prado. I even leave the lights on in the Outback now because it just works, people register you're there subconsciously almost instantly.

While DRLs Led type do this some are just piss weak and small and often get lost in glare but yellow full sized reflectors don't.

The aftermarket ones always remind me of a poor mans solution trying to be like BMW angel eyes like hid xenon swaps. Looks wrong.

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
1 to move it to the Lighting section
2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section
7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs
5 to flame the spell checkers
3 to correct spelling/grammar flames
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 anal-retentive
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum
11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"
1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 18 months from now and start it all over again.
and one Linux user to say don't change the lightbulb, welcome to the darkside

Why don't all cars have DRL? My friend just bought a 2016 Ford Everest and it has no DRL. If you want the lights on you can switch them on and if you want them off you can even turn them off......Nice to have the choice.

Don't they have daytime running smoke to alert others of them being on the road, the flash spec ones actually have flames :P

Ok an update on this mod,

I did the mod as pictured but didnt hook up the external DRL's to 87a. Instead changed the Parker globes to a super bright LED to copy the Kakas Drl.

Hi, I decided today I would try to change the way my Prado always has the headlights on due to Toyota using the low beams for drl.
The issue I have with it is, that 70-80% of most peoples driving is done during the day time. In 6 months I had gone through a set of after market lamps. I do realise that visibility is a big safety factor and in saying that I have ordered a set of Narva 225 Ultima 50W HID lights which come with the drl LED's on the top of the light housing.

So this is what I did.
Firstly I realised the dash illumination lamps are only on when the headlight switch is in "Park" or "ON". So I picked up the dash illumination feed from under the dash on the right hand side behind the switch panel. This dash illumination feed would operate two SY4046 SPDT relays which I purchased from Jaycar. These relays have a normally open and a normally closed contact. The low beam wire at the back of the lights will be cut and the feed side connected to the common contact. The wire heading to the headlight connector is connected to the normally open contact. So when the dash lights are not on, the low beam power feed is interrupted but power is available at the normally closed contact which I will feed the LED drl on the new Narva's.

Connected a 2 core cable to the Green+ and White/Black- (the two centre wires on the plug) and run the cable through the firewall around to both low beam headlight connectors.

Relays inserted in existing wiring and coils connected to the Tail light feed.

The relays can then be taped to the wiring harness as they are very light and are encapsulated so no need to worry about water ingress.

Electrical drawing
Or to disable low beam as DRL mate. Use normal relay connect to parker control on/off, main wire connect to Low beam. When no power to parker, open circuit on Low beam. Turn on parker, low beam on.

Interesting that Philips seem to be releasing various +200% LEDs bulbs in H16, H11, HB4, HB3 etc
https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/11362...specifications
Probably expensive ($200 for a pair of H16's) but less power consumption, brighter and longer lasting if you have a GX or GXL

Finally found time to do this mod. Much happier now, headlights off when switch says OFF, headlights on when switch says ON!

And the dash illumination is the way it should be.
