  • What are these cables meant to do? - Prado 150 kakadu

    Hi All,

I noticed these unused cables in the centre console right underneath the 4wd controls (behind the little storage under the 4wd control panel) in my Prado Kakadu 150 series MY14.

Can anybody recognise what these cables are for? I just want to make sure whether they are left unused by mistake or whether they are unused cables from the factory.

To give some background on why I am worried about this - I did a recent UHF radio install from ARB Artarmon and came across one of the worst job i have ever seen for such a trivial task. It was installed in the centre console (i actually requested for install under the dash and UHF handheld input socket to the dash, but the input is left hanging on the side *facepalm*). Later when I installed the input socket myself, I noticed there was unsealed soldered wire and one of the switch socket left unplugged (as you can see from the image Click image for larger version

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Kams,

    Referring to your 1st pic,
On my 2009 Kakadu the cable with the blue wrap on it went to the back of the crawl control switch bank, the one with the pink wrap went to the H4/L4 rotary switch, the one with the white wrap goes to the center diff lock switch. I have put up a couple of pics for comparison bearing in mind the control layout has changed on the facelift models so I'm not sure how this affects the looms. There may be some legacy connections left over from the design changes. It looks like your plugs are a bit different to mine too.

    My 4WD selector panel connections:-

My wiring loom connections to the 4WD selector panel :-

On mine that grey plug in my 2nd pic (not the white one I'm pointing at) does not go anywhere. It must be a legacy plug from an option my Kakadu didn't come with.

Don't know if this helps at all or just confuses you more, at least it should give you some clues.

Bit of a botch job on that 2nd pic of yours, there should not be any exposed solder. From memory all those sockets should have something plugged into them. Reminds me of when I paid ARB good money to install a UHF in my previous Prado and they just left it loose under the drivers seat, not secured to even the carpet. That's why I did it myself in this Prado, got the result I wanted that way.

      Hi fido666,

Thanks for the information, I really appreciate your effort to post the reply.a

I did not remove the 4wd control when I was working on the center console. I will check the back of 4wd control to check if any switch is unplugged. I put in a electrical tape on the exposed solder, and the unplugged cable next to it was the one for driver seat heater.

I am really surprised that ARB Artarmon after charging 240$ labour charge does such a poor job. I did the air compressor along with my UHF installation and guess what, there is problems there too. The switch installed in the dash to the drivers right can be easily taken off with a gentle pull. There is nothing in the back holding it in place except a two sided tape. To make things worse, the switch is too big for the switch blank, that it partially covers the blank below it making them unusable. I tried to change the switch and bought one of the 150 series AOB switches, but that doesn't work either, since they make the blank hole bigger to fit the ARB switch. I don't know how to fix this since it is blocking the blank below (Kakadu already has very few empty switch blanks to use)

Yes, you are right, the controls are slightly different in mine. Mine has the 4wd controls on top of yours and there is a small storage in place of where you have the 4wd ccontrols.

This brings me to this question, I wonder if your 4wd control panel fits into the little storage area in mine? If it does, then it can be a perfect option to add additional switches to mine later. Any 150 pre-facelift Prado owners in sydney willing to help me check this?

      Cheers

Not really able to help you (my GXL has even less kit in it you see), but I would say that $240/hour is a bit much. My parents and I have quotes from a total of 4 different ARBs doing 2 different jobs (canopy install and suspension fitment) and labour was only $105/hour for all of the quotes.

Id pay $240 an hour for ARB to leave my playdo alone . . . biggest bunch of screwdriver jockeys i have had the misfortune to encounter

most recent adventure was a mates Subi forester, he had a cargo barrier fitted due to large dogs in the back, goes to pick it up and they are a bit sheepish . . . they said its ready but we don't want you to take it today . . . . they managed to drill right through the roof of the car when mounting the brackets, NOT ONLY 1 SIDE, couple holes each side . . . .

I have a long and distinguished list of similar experiences from family and friends dating back to when I was a teenager and they drilled 8 incorrectly located holes in y old mans 60 series for an overhead consul -- BAD MOVE THAT ONE !!

cant help but offer free advice of seeking "technicians" with more duty of care.

Well, I learnt my lesson after paying a big penalty.. No wonder everyone in this forum look to DYI their stuff.. It's not only exciting to DYI, but we will also know what was done and how it was done..

I have very limited knowledge on the cars and have my Prado only for couple of months now. But already learnt a lot and can dismantle the entire dash and put it back.. though it sounds like easy task for many of you here.. for me that was a lot learnt in few weeks.. Thanks to this forum, I am learning a lot and hopefully will learn more..

            Cheers

              Hi Spilsy,

My mistake, it is 240$ labour not 240$ per hour.. I corrected my post - my apologies for the misleading info.. it was approx. 90 minutes job.

No problem at all, I had those pics stored from when I did my UHF install. I have pulled the dash apart on the Kaka so many times I've lost count LOL.

I put in a electrical tape on the exposed solder, and the unplugged cable next to it was the one for driver seat heater.
Just bear in mind that with the warmth that builds under that tunnel the tape may peel off down the track. If you can wrap some heat shrink tube around the join somehow then shrink it that will solve that potential issue.

From memory they charged me over $300 labour but mine was a remote head unit. When I pulled it out of the old 95 series before I traded it in and realised just how simple a job it really was I was very annoyed with myself for not doing the install myself.

I did the air compressor along with my UHF installation and guess what, there is problems there too.
I'd be going back and voicing my displeasure, at the prices they charge such sloppy work is not acceptable.

Not so - one plug is for the hair dryer and the other for the latte machine. Didn't the dealer install these into your car on delivery? Take it back.
