How bright is the display? Is it distracting at night?

To be honest, I barely notice mine at night. There is a subtle red glow, but nothing that I would call distracting.

Below is a photo i took at night - its a close-up shot, but should give an indication of brightness:

i would not be worried about 0.2V difference that is less than 2% error.
most cheap multimeters would not be that accurate.

I'm happy with mine. I'm learning how much power my fridge uses over night, what the AC sucks out of the power system, how good my alternator is at charging.

Given the neatness of the solution, its worth my money.

It all depends on what you're looking for in your volt meter - this is an indication only device that will give you a heads up if a battery is getting low, or not being charged etc. If you want to know, to the nth degree, how much juice your battery is giving you, an expensive multimeter is the way to go.

True to a certain extent... if we were worried about the difference between 0Volts and 14 volts. Then it's not a major concern but given that we are watching for when it's hitting 10 volts. It can matter. Considering between the two there is a variance of .4 volts. That's the difference between 12 and 11.6 volts. At 12volts I can start... at 11.6 I might be in trouble.

I don't find mine distracting either.

Even if the reading is out by a few tenths of a volt, it is consistent, which is still good as an indicator. I'd say it's worth the dosh.

Hey Spilsy why would the AC take any power from the electrical system ? Isn't the compressor belt driven ? I don't see any difference in voltage with it on or off. I have the Projecta DBM100.

Haven't the foggiest...Im sure someone with a bit more knowledge can explain that.
I do know that since the AC has been working harder, the charge to the batteries has been lower, averaging about 13.6 v rather than 14. the charge is consistently 14 v when the AC is not blowing cold air. Note, the "AC" Button is always on.

Not so much the Ac itself but the fan can certainly load up the alternator. The Ac will bring the voltage down when sitting at idle and and the blower fan us running plus also the condenser fan near the radiator. So not so much the Ac compressor itself but it's ancillaries. Depends how you use it I guess. My AC is nearly always on but fan speed is usually all the way down to 1. So I see maybe 100mV drop. But turn it up.... oh lord have mercy on my alternator!

When I switch on all my accessories at idle, I can easily bring my voltage down below 11. At higher engine speeds I can drop it below 12. I've upgraded my battery to earth strap, battery to engine earth strap, upgraded alternator to fuse block and added a true alternator direct to battery cable. Alternator is healthy... I just have too much shit hanging off of it. Haha

The AC compressor also has an electromagnetic clutch - I think they use 4-5A (50-60w).

OK well there must be something wrong with either my AC or Voltage gauge.
When idling, turning the AC on increases the idle speed, thereby increasing the Voltage !
Maybe this is different for V6 vs Diesel ? Mine is V6.

For the record, mine is a diesel. Also for the record, I can be driving and the voltage with the AC is still about 13.6v
