  • Exhaust Rattle

    Hi guys,

    07 D4D Auto.

As anyone had a problem with a exhaust rattle just under the drivers seat while in gear and on the brake? It now does it even neutral. Disappears once the revs increase. I have traced it down to that, tightened the bolts for the flange. (Spring loaded) and still not resolved. Just wondering it the springs have weakened or the seal is worn before I go and spend some money.

    Cheers,

    Phil

You will need to remove the bolts with the springs and coat with never seize or similar. This is a flex joint so the springs are to allow some movement. I have also at times put some never seize on the seal part as well.

Thanks Rusty, I finally got around to sorting it out. Put some never seize on it and it still rattled.

Toyota wanted $47 for a new seal. Went to the local exhaust shop and he gave me a packer, packed it and coated in never seize. All good!

Over 5 years I had that problem occur twice. There is a "gasket" in an exhaust expansion joint approximately under the driver seat. The gasket "collapses" or gets squashed/distorted over time, and it creates an annoying rattle.
We had this gasket replaced in that flange and the old gasket was crushed both times and not seating properly.
Let me share one of the most amazingly stupid experiences I had with regards to a toyota dealer service center.

        1. I notice this annoying rattle under the car, particularly noticeable at idle. When the exhaust was cold, you could reach ed under the car and grab the exhaust and make the rattle disappear... and quite quickly determine that the rattle was coming from that flange or joint approximately under the drivers seat. This first happened during the warranty period, so I stopped at a toyota dealer service department, which is not always easy or convenient for me to do due to work commitments.

        2. I ask the service person if I could get a mechanic or someone to quickly have a look at the rattle so we can identify what the location of the rattle is called (as I still don't know what you call that joint)...and the reply was "no sir, we don't inspect anything, you need to book the car in and we will look at it then". I said that would mean I need to book the car again at some stage in the future, then they will have to potentially order a part and then I will have to book it in again for installation of the part, and I just can't do that easily due to work, so if someone could have a look quickly it will only take 1 minute to show you where the rattle is coming from, it might make it easier for all concerned. "No sir, you need to book it in".

        3. Ok, so I went back outside and took a movie of the rattle on my phone, clearly identifying the location and the source of the rattle and went back inside and asked if I could show the movie on my phone to a mechanic. "No sir, you need to book the car in" was the reply. The service lady noted that there was a problem, and the customer had a movie of the problem on his mobile phone, and they booked my car in.

4 Two weeks later was the earliest appointment, and I made some changes to my work schedule to leave the car with them for the day, which is really inconvenient as I live over an hour away etc.

5 I go to pick my car up, and am told by the service person "Sir, we have checked and re-checked your phone bluetooth in your car, and we can find absolutely no problem with your bluetooth, the problem must be with your phone"
I said, "but I don't have a problem with my phone, I have an annoying rattle in the exhaust ...I have never reported a problem with my bluetooth". The service person says ..."Sir, it says here on the service request form that the customer has a problem and he has it on his phone"...I say, "No, the problem is not with my phone, I filmed the problem with the exhaust ON my phone, here, let me show you the exhaust flange rattle" ....Now the service person says "ah, oh so that's the problem, you will need a new exhaust gasket, I wish we had known that before "...I say..."Yes, that's what I wanted to show you a couple of weeks ago"... Then the service person says .. "Sorry, we don't carry those gaskets in stock, you will need to book the car in again"....ok. so we book the car in for another service in about 5 weeks time, the only time I could attend due to work commitments...argh.

        6. Well, a few days later I get a phone call..."Sir, your exhaust flange gasket has arrived, you need to come in within 21 days to pick it up else we have to send it back to the warehouse".. Its a $7.50 part (approx), and I can't come in to pick it up as I am away with work. "Sorry sir, we will have to send it back to the warehouse if you have not picked it up within the required time frame"...Huh.

        7. So I arrange for someone else to pick it up, at great inconvenience to them, and I later take it with me to have it installed ...under warranty. Guess what....its the wrong part!!!! Eventually I get it replaced, under warranty, and rattle fixed.

...that, and several other comedic, stupid and incompetent episodes is why I have nothing to do with that particular so called dealership..ever again. Astounding incompetence and frustration displayed on many occasions. I asked for the wheels rotated at a service, yes sir, wheels rotated and balanced....but not done...oil filter not changed when charged for a new oil filter, (sorry sir, must have been an oversight)..every single service, without fail, something was charged for, but not done...honestly, during the entire warranty period they botched something every single time!

So I use a dedicated diesel fitter now to service our Prados, and a few years later the exhaust rattle returned...the car was serviced by our trusty and competent diesel fitter/mechanic, and ..."by the way, I have also replaced the exhaust flange gasket that was rattling, the old gasket was crushed somewhat and rattling, and whoever replaced it last time did the bolts up so tight it was a bugger to remove them, I've installed the gasket and used some 'never seize' on the threads".

So...yes, the annoying exhaust flange rattle under the driver is easily fixed, and the best way to fix it seems to be to replace the circular "gasket" , and don't over tighten the bolts and use some "never seize on the threads".

Stealer-ships, thats why they call them technicians these days and not mechanics, they arent mechanics at all, just on paper

True story, im at my mechanics one day and these gusy are old school, lap diffs build big blocks full ground up rebuilds, u get the idea...mechanic from a nearby dealership that has a lion as its emblem walks into the shops and asks for a qoute to build a hipo motor

like what the...how embarrassed would u be being a mechanic asking another to build u a motor, ordinary

A dealership is a place of last resort...glad u got it sorted out, eventually.
