  • 2004 Grande Air Suspension - intermittant fault

    Hi there,

I know there are lots of posts about this but I have read many of them and I am not sure if my issue is the same........so here goes.

I have a Toyota Landcruiser Prado GRJ 120R 4.0 V6 A/T Grande with air suspension.
Recently the suspension drops to the bump stops and for a while won't pump up again (2 days) then at some random point it will work again. I have found that if I pump it up high before everyone gets in, and also when I park up it is fine, dropping to normal height automatically while driving - but if I forget to pump it up once it gets lower (2 passengers in rear) it won't pump up and drops slowly down to the bump stops. Last night I tried jacking the car up (on the frame, not axle) and once I got it to nearly full height the compressor worked fine and pumped it up. The only other thing I've noticed is the 'turn off height adjustment butoon' (shows yellow shock absorber signal on dash) goes off once I start driving if I turn it on while stationary - I thought it should stay on permanently - otherwise it is a fabulous car. It is almost as if once it gets too low the unit has no idea what height the vehicle is (the green sensor light shows - N (Middle)) and so it gives up and won't do anything.

p.s. If I pump it up high it stays high for a day or 2 easily and I can't hear any leaks from the bags.

Do you have any ideas please?

    Thanks. Bob

    WHat year is your Grande?
How quickly does the suspension drop? Overnight?

Before I replaced my bags, mine would do similar strange things.
It would stay up for a few days no dramas, then overnight all of a sudden be down to the bump stops.
Then other days overnight it would fully deflate.
Some days I could hear the leaks, other days it would be fine.

In the end I ended up swapping them out, they were both nearly rooted.

I do beleive I have read that if the air compressor is on excessively it will stop working - which may explain yours not working for a few days.

Its a 2004. It doesn't seem to drop at all as long as I keep it on the high setting. Once it is at the mid way point if I add extra load (another passenger) it can drop in 10 to 15 mins

Being an '04, the airbags (if still the original ones) are due for replacement.
It sounds like there is a leak somewhere. It is usually in the driver's side airbag.

Yep your airbags are stuffed . When you put it on the high setting the cracks in the rubber are closed up and will hold air . On normal setting they open up and deflate . You won't be able to see the problem until you take them out . Change them before you stuff the compressor which costs a bucket load more .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

                  Dear all,
Just wanted to say thanks for everyone's help.
Yes, it was the airbags - amts was spot on - Driver's side was leaking but nearside was well on the way.
I ordered the parts from Amayama $363 plus $80 shipping - arrived from the UAE within 7 days of order. Toyota dealer's best price was $795.
The bags were fiddly to fit but not impossible - I did it on the drive with axle stands under the body at the back. For the driver's side I loosened the run of the air pipe so I could drop the bag down and then got the pipe out of the top of the bag - fine tweezers slid along the pipe into the fitting got it out eventually. For the nearside one I disconnected the pipe from the reservoir to drop the bag down (Be really careful remembering the routing - under the loom!). I couldn't access the top of the bags from the rear so I had to come through the side in the tiny gap between the chassis and body.
To refit the clips I attatched them to a tent peg with an elastic band, fed them through, lined them up and then pushed them home with the blade of a flat screwdriver.
                  Thanks again for your advice.
                  Bob

                    Hi all,
Can you advise me the original part number for the air bags ? In particular the drivers side. I am experiencing this problem also and want to check supply before I dive in.
                    All assistance appreciated.

                      Supply is fine.
Japan or UAE has heaps (amayama) there is none in Aust. Unless Toyota themselves have some.
