  • How to protect from electronic theft ?

    Hi guys

I will receive at the end of the year a brand new prado (2.8, auto, full options).
I have read many things about electronic theft, even found smart-key reprogrammer for prado :-(

I would like to know your best ways to protect from theft.
Up to know the best thing I found is to disconnect the EBD connector to remove access to CAN-Bus.

    Some ideas ?

    Thanks

One way and it is not absolute, is to place your key fob in a tin containter wherever you place your keys when in the house. Read something about long range sensors picking up the fob information from a distance.

Maybe a secret switch isolating the fuel pump would work?

End of the day mate someone who has the ability to duplicate your key is going to y take it no matter what. Isn't that what flat bed tow trucks were invented for lol. Someone's idea of an isolated kill switch would work for sure. Plenty of options including aftermarket alarm systems that integrate with it. Long and complicated process for install to make it effortless use though. Need to be an installer you can trust.

I've done it in the past for other smart key systems including Toyotas. But it's pricey...my usual charge for that sort of protection and to put the system into full alert if being towed is usually in excess of 1500.

Still interested? Sing out and I can go into further details if you can handle the technical post that'll come with it lol as it's a lot to wrap your head around.

I would have thought the problem with an after market integrated unit that ties into the keyless entry is if they have the resources to monitor the transmission and capature it then it is no safer than the cars own security. Granted if they can't unlock the car using the keyless entry then it can add another layer of protection if wired intop the cars electrics, but I was under the impression that these days they have the ability to record the lock signal and then replay it to gain entry to the vehicle. Code hopping if employed, is it in the factory keyless system? would make it harder but I beleive they can crack these too?

There is no one stand alone unit that would do it. In the past I have used a combination of devices. A viper alarm system with a canbus module that will allow the viper to continue to be armed and disarmed via the Toyota remote control. This provides the additional alarm security to have a tilt sensor added for tow away security... combine that with the Viper smart start module will give you the benefit of gps tracking plus also phone alert and vehicle control if something happens to the car. Then the addition of a secondary passive keyless entry system running as a standalone immobilizer instead of keyless entry will require both the Toyota and the PKE remote to be duplicated to both gain entry and also start the vehicle. The system can also be setup in such a manner that if the PKE remote is duplicated but not the toyota then this in turn will trigger the alarm. Done by simply taking the PKE unlock output and running it directly to the alarms sensor input... hence triggering the alarm if the toyota remote isn't available to disarm the viper.

As I said... there is no standalone unit that can be purchased... you effectively use multiple units to do things they aren't designed for... so as for a set of install instructions... there won't be any. But given that at the end of the day the additional units will simply be looking for a yes or no answer on a particular channel. It doesn't give a damn where it comes from... so the pke unlock output is a pulse to ground and the alarms sensor input is looking for a ground signal. Provided it gets what it wants... off it goes.

Oh for the good old days when you would just remove the rotor button!

You could do the the above and they might just load it on a tow truck and drive
away and no one is likely to say anything even if the alarm should be sounding.

I'll go for the insurance company that supplies a new one if yours is stolen and
              less than 10 years old!

I know right... but on that note of the tow truck, with the system I cobble together it triggers the siren if it's tilted more than 2 degrees... in doing so your phone goes ballistic as well. Still doesn't stop it from happening but sure as hell slows them down and you get notified immediately.

More than half the cars stolen in WA result from the crooks finding your keys when they burgle your home, usually whilst you are curled up in bed asleep. If you are lucky, they won't resort to putting a knife to your throat whilst demanding your keys and cash.

Nash - we used to live in Africa and after having one too many cars broken into, including interrupting the thieves, we had a hidden kill switch fitted plus a set of 8mm steel plates welded that went over the pedals. Wouldn't stop the car being picked up onto a truck or being hijacked, but it was enough to deter them.

My grandad also had a kill switch on a timer, so if the car was hijacked it killed the electrics after 60secs so at least they were not near you when it died.

Exactly! The reality is on a later model vehicle it's so goddamned hard to steal that the ones that will take it are happy to break into your house and just take the keys. Let's face it... someone breaks in and points a gun saying they just want your keys... you really going to argue over a car with insurance? I know I sure as hell wouldn't. "Take the keys and here's an extra 50 for fuel... you're gonna need it!"

Just have to try and make it not as tempting for them to try and steal - keep it in a garage, shed, carport, behind a gate etc.
Remove anything that isn't in regular use that may look appealing like awnings etc

I know guys that have some pretty special & rare classic muscle cars that have bollards installed behind the cars in a garage.
One even had a massive chain that was bolted & padlocked to the floor that he used to loop around his diff.

Unfortunately though, nowadays if someone really wants to steal your car/possessions/identity then they will.

Modern day kill switch, love it. How do you also rig the seat belt to detain the loverly person until the cops find him?

30V at a few hundred amps fed into either side of the buckle should be sufficient to weld the clasp into the buckle! The flash should also scare the crap out of the bastard as well.
