2003 1kz-te 5 speed manual. I get MAP pressure, intake air temp, coolant temp, engine revs, fault history etc. The thing that isn't working is fuel usage.

Reconnecting to the OBD2 dongle can be hit and miss by bluetooth. Usually a case of remove, disable bluetooth then try again.

I have the same situation with my 1KZ (October 04) I note amps said the connector is usually under the dash but mine is under the drivers seat. I wonder if I am using the incorrect plug?? Any comments?

        Any help please?

          Hi All,

Long time mechanic, but new to this forum, looks like the right place for my question.

          I have a 2005 Prado GXL with a 1KZ-TE engine, 4 speed Auto.
I have fitted an Android head unit to the vehicle and after reading this thread have purchased an OBD-II adapter (HTTP://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121448673471) as per the recommendations. I also purchased and installed the full version of the Torque Pro app on the unit and added the text string (ATIB 96 \n ATIIA 13 \n ATSH8213F0 \n ATSP4 \n 0100) into the very advanced setting section. I have also tried ticking the "Use alternate OBD header" checkbox (tried both on and off) and I still cannot communicate with the ECM. I am connecting to the Bluetooth OBDII adapter no problems but when I find the error count on the Torque app just keeps climbing. I have also tried with no text string at all but get the same result. I am aware that the adapter could be faulty and I might be chasing my tail but I was wondering if anyone has a breakdown of what the commands in the text string mean or if anyone has had a similar problem and found a solution?

          Any help is much appreciated.

          Regards,
          Marty

Others with 1KZ engines may advise differently (I have a 1KD, so didn't have to do the workaround), but I would think there's a very good chance it is in fact the adapter, especially if it's one of the cheap ones.

As long as I'm here, I'm going to add this link for the Custom PID's for auto temps for the 120 series, since this thread's the sticky.

              http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...8-3-0-D4D-auto

I believe the 150's use the different PID and formula values referred to in that link, but can't confirm that.

Thanks for the response Ziggle. I am pushing the seller to replace the OBDII adapter but am not getting much luck since it came as a packaged deal with the headunit. I think this adapter cactus and will be my new paperweight. I am looking around at the better OBDII adapters on the market (and that are compatible with Torque Pro). The OBDLink MX & LX are both recommended by Torque but I am not sure if they will work with the MOBD init string required for the '05 Prado 1KZ. Has anyone had experience (and success pairing to 1KZ) with the more expensive OBDII adapters? I don't want to drop $150 for another paperweight.

I have a OBDLink LX and can confirm the init string for M-OBD in Torque works. I found though the OBDLink android app won't connect to the ecu with the init string used in torque. I have updated the firmware in the adapter by plugging the adapter into a later model car (wife's) that is OBD2 compliant and connecting to the adapter with the OBDLink app for the update.

Who is the seller? Is it the same seller as the ebay link in the first post?

I think OBDLink LX is the answer for me then. Thanks Adrian. I'll purchase from Scantool.net to avoid any chinese ebay copies I think.
Amts, seller was the head unit supplier (the Vlink unit came with it free). I think I'll chalk this one up as a loss and purchase a better one. I believe the OBDLink units also auto power down which is a bonus. (although not sure if the power supply on the 16 pin connector is still live after ecu shutdown, would need to stick my meter on it and lock the car then wait for ECU to sleep).

What is the MAC address showing on the bluetooth OBD dongle? It could be a dodgy unit.

AFAIK, the ones supplied by the ebay seller on the link in the first post have been OK.

Just wondering if anyone had has had any luck conecting this unit (from the original post)to a 90 series 5VZFE 3.4 petrol. Yes I know this is the 120 section. I also know that the 90 has the rectangular conector, but you can get the adapter from the same seller. Ken.

                                Japanese Market Prado OBD advice

Hi, im new to the forum. I have read lots about prado's with M-OBD but it seems that it is hit and miss. I have a 2003 Japanese market prado TX(TA-VZJ120W-GKPEK). The engine is 5VZ-FE 3.378L.

The OBD port is a 16pin type. I did see that some people have trouble seeing the fuel economy but can see the rest, this is just a shot in the dark but on my dash I have an onboard display that shows altitude barometer temperature and fuel economy. I wonder the people who cant get fuel economy to show have a similar display.

I had a rough idle this spring but it disappeared this summer and has not returned yet. It is still pretty warm outside, so I am waiting to see if it is the summer heat. I also added some fuel/injector additive to the gas and the dealership cleaned the throttle body so it is still a mystery which one is the cause. I decided to clean my MAF sensor and while reading about it I learned about OBD scanners and also this forum.

I have decided to connect a scanner for before and after readings of the MAF sensor cleaning but even after reading all of this I still don't know which scanner to buy.

It seems that since I have a 16 pin port I may not need any extra cables, just the dongle and an android device? I will attach a photo of my OBD port. If anyone wants other details photos etc just let me know.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread. It it the most informative that I've come across so far! I am in Japan so Ebay isnt an option but I will try to find the same model here. If anyone has advice please let me know! Click image for larger version
