Hi all, I have a 07' 120 GLX D4D and I would like to fit a snorkel and I like the look of the TJM model, but I know the Safari units are excellent and proven there quality, I would like some advice or advantages from one over the other? Cheers

TJM Snorkel vs Safari snorkel which one is better?

Hi, I have had a TJM on my 120 for about 5 yrs and have had no problems with it. Key thing is to be sure the installation is done right and that all joints are well sealed. Test this by removing the head and blocking the tube, motor should stop shortly after and no hissing sounds from leaky joins should be heard.
Went for the TJM as don't like the 'startled meerkat' look of the Safari and advertising cr*p about ram effect which is nonsense.
Cheers,
Ken

I went for the Safari because it doesn't have the "giant slug crawling up your windscreen" look of the TJM, each to his own. The Safari does have the option to remove the standard head and fit a snorkel pre-cleaner like this unit from Sherpa 4x4 :-

Here's another option from Uni Filter :- http://www.uniflow.com.au/contents/en-us/d2.html
Not sure how easy it is to do the same with the Airtec although I note that Uni Filter do have replacement ram heads for TJM snorkels on their website. If you plan on travelling in extremely dusty environments it's something to take into consideration.

If your a smart off roader you will want to be able to turn the head around 180degrees. No point directing the bush str8 into the air box.
Correct the air ram effect is not happening. Tell them their dreaming
Edit:
I have done some real comparison tests since this happened
That was 2 solid weeks in the bush.
Amazing they come back like new
Since then I have turned the head backwards & it's unbelievable the difference!
Some performance experts actually tell us we will get more responsiveness & better fuel economy which some drivers say works for them.
Personally I didn't see much difference, didn't really have a fair test. I like to be FAIR.
Best economy ever happened to be with the head backwards.
Remember one day in the dust the air filter can get more dust & blocked than the standard 30,000klms on-road. You need to do whatever you can to help prevent this.
Naturally the longer the drive the larger the clean benefitLast edited by Anth120playdo; 21-11-2015, 07:29 AM.

You can actually get a few different types of 'ram head' designs for the TJM snorkle, so you're not stuck with a golf club/slug type if that isn't to your liking. Also, I wouldn't bother with those Unifilter pre cleaner socks, been there, done that and spent an hour dismantling the air intake system to fish it out as it got sucked in, apparently a very common occurrence according to others I have spoken to. IMO it's easier to just carry a spare air cleaner or keep your distance if in a dusty convoy.

They both perform equally well, its really down to looks IMO. I like the look of the safari and the TJM just doesn't do it for me, but plenty of others think the opposite.
Turning the head around to stop bush entering the intake is a waste of time, below is a very small snippet of an overgrown track we drove, it was overgrown like that for 40-50kms, it would have taken longer to turn the head around and back again than it did to remove the minuscule amount of bush that actually went into the snorkel.

Hey mate I don't know where you are in Aus but I know a guy that supplies and fit TJM snorkels for $400 cash. He's no backyard bloke, he does a very professional job. He's on the Northside of Brisbane. Cheers mate.Last edited by Goggo; 28-12-2015, 10:22 PM.

'Air ram'? If that is the case, bikers wearing half/open face helmets will have lungs full of air when they ride. Whoever thought of the 'air ram' idea has a good imagination. The engine sucks in just the amount of air it needs.
Between safari and airtec, it is much of a muchness, just personal taste in appearance and cost. I have airtec for its lower profile on the vehicleMy white GX auto build thread - clicky

I know this is a 2 year old sleeping thread but I having the same question above.
I understand that the Safari has proven itself very good but I like the minimalist look of the TJM(with golf style head) on my LC150(sorry, I know this a LC120 forum but I thought you guys have much more thing to share here).
My question thought is what happened when it is raining hard? I saw a video that say to keep the drain hole at the bottom the air intake assembly while other say need to sealed it to keep the water from entering...I am confused...
