  • Petrol vs Diesel: A 10 year urban running cost comparison

    Hey all,

There’s been some intense debate over the years with the Petrol vs Diesel argument.

Typically there isn’t much in the way of hard number crunching, so I thought it would be interesting to compare the running costs over a 10 year period based on historical pump prices.

The pump prices have been sourced from the Australian Institute of Petroleum, and are the average national price for each calendar year. As it is an average over a calendar year, it is statistically “washed out” a bit, or a bit on the data poor side. However, I don’t believe it will change things much if you broke the price down to a month by month average.

The plot below shows the national average pump price from 2004-2014.

What is interesting about this plot is that while diesel is historically always more expensive than ULP, as you’ll see below, the difference in running cost is getting wider, meaning diesel is closing the gap.

The next plot showing cost/year is created by assuming values for fuel economy and an average weekly driving distance. For this I have chosen 300km/week, or 15600km/year, or 156000km, which is what my Prado has on it after 10 years. For the diesel I’ve used 11litres/100km and 17litres/100km for the petrol.

You can of course change these numbers to suit your own particular driving habits, however, for the sake of simplicity and to get the point across, my fuel economy figures reflect a typical daily driver in an urban setting, who has a mix of urban/highway driving.

You can see that the difference has grown from $850 to $1300 over the 10 year period, showing that diesel has closed the gap. The final running costs over this 10 year period are $37071 for the petrol, and $24866 for the diesel.

This is a difference of $12205, or on average a saving of $1220.50/year by running the diesel in an urban setting.

Note that my thread is only about running costs for an urban setting, and doesn’t include arguments about servicing and any other extra costs outside the normal service schedule.

If anyone has accurate figures for the service schedule up to 160,000km, I’d be happy to add the service costs over this 10 year period to widen the discussion. Note that servicing costs can vary dramatically depending on who does the service, so any comparison has to use the same workshop.

I didn't analyse it, but that sounds fair.
Coming from a petrol owner, you can't argue with that!

In my calculations years ago it was still much cheaper to run the diesel with new Injectors every 120k.

      Hey ####,

Do you have figures for service schedules (up to 150000km) for the diesel and petrol based on accurate workshop hours required?

        Hey,

Not really, I do more & less than Toyota book. I'm a bit low tech too! No computer to tell me what it is, lol.......
You see, they wrote the service book before the engines were out there, they have been here for 10 years & my best maintenance practise is to do what they need, which is not what the book says.

By the book service there would not be much in it at all.
For 1kd Add a set of BDG injectors, say twice in 10 years? Say $2000x2 $4000.00. But then v6 has its issues also, as you know.

          Hey,

I also forgot the fixed price servicing up to 60000km for 2008+ vehicles, is that still running?

Easy enough to calculate say a 2006 and a 2009 model for both petrol and diesel if someone has accurate figures for parts and labour for each service.

We have had our 150's on a Lease for the past 5yrs & it's only just come out of lease in the last month, so it's been serviced at the same place since new.

Our Running Costs since new in Nov'10 has been:

            Kms travelled: 130278kms
            Total Fuel Used: 16114ltrs
            Total Fuel Cost: $24556
            Avg Economy: 12.4ltrs/100kms
Total Servicing Costs (Lease Servicing Costs only): $7115.
Total Servicing Costs (Leasing Costs + other Maint Costs): $10385

            Period of Ownership: 5.12 years

Avg Distance Travelled per year: 25445kms
Avg Fuel Cost per Year: $4796
Avg Servicing Costs(All) per year: $2028

Total AVG running cost per year: $6824 / 25445kms per year or an AVG of $268 per 1000kms travelled

(Note: No new injectors yet but I guess that's probably not too far away....)

                Hey Rob,

Great information to add to the thread!

I'm a bit surprised your fuel costs work out on average to $1.52/litre over the last 5 years, which is a bit high compared to the national diesel average over the last 5 years, more like $1.44/litre.

I checked the Brisbane average for diesel, and it's very close to the national average, so I'm surprised! Maybe filling up in Cashmere is a bad idea?

Using your figure of 12.4litres/100km makes a substantial difference, reducing the average difference/year to $904.

                      Hey,

Ah ok that makes sense then! I remember filling up in Innamincka once for $2.50/litre, worse than Mt dare!

Even at 12litres/100km, it still makes quite a difference, and brings out the difference/year at around $994.

Not sure we'll see $1000 difference in normal servicing costs between diesel and petrol each year!

                        Hey all,

                        I found this online servicing cost schedule;

                        http://www.carservice.com.au/car-ser...auto-09_05-09/

I'm not sure how real world representative the figures are, but if you take the averages, the cost of servicing the petrol is $100 cheaper per year, or $1000 total over the 10 year period including services up to 150000km.

So assuming these servicing costs as according to the book, we're talking $1000 in favor of the petrol.

If we now add in extra servicing costs outside the schedule, such as two lots of injectors for the diesel ($4000 total according to ####), then the diesel is still ahead by around $5000 over the 10 year period.

"Normal Servicing" - I don't think u will ever see a $1000 difference, but if u are going to keep your car long term and keep it in top order, then I reckon your Servicing Costs will be higher than normal if u factor in Transmission; Power Steering Fluids and what ever else u should also be doing to keep your vehicle in top order..... but these costs also apply to Petrol vehicles as well.....
If u factor in new injectors every 100k or so that are done by a qualified mechanic as well, then it would be interesting to see the figures then....

Does $500/year, or a total saving of $5000 over 10 years for the diesel sound anything like your original calculations? That includes x2 injector changes.
