  • Dual battery setup for 2.8 1GD

    Hi PradoPointers

Am about to get a dual battery fitted to my new Prado (MY16 with the 2.8 litre D4D).

Have read this thread (and a couple of others) which refer to needing to trick the smart alternator in order to charge the second battery ... does anyone know if this also applies to the current engine?

    Thanks - Sim

    Sim,

The new engine doesn't have an "ALT-S", from my investigations one had a
"ALT-S/ICS" which to me implies it might have a smart charge setup with a
    current sensor.

Another car didn't have this fuse either?

I have been unable to find out anything from Toyota as they haven't updated their
on line service manuals, and no feed back on here from current owners as to what
    they have found.

If it is a smart charge setup it may be able to be turned off by the dealer, but
until more info becomes avaialable who knows?

I really wanted to put LeighW's voltage booster into my 2.8 (took it out from the 3.0L) but as Leigh says - there is no ALT-S and I dont have the electronic skills to work it back. In the meantime my issue was solved as a Redarc BCDC was given to me for my b'day!!

Must admit that I didnt think much of the DC-DC option and considered it a 'bottleneck' as to charging rates, but as a light user of the AUX batt it was worked very well to date.

Hopefully down the track LeighW might be able to confirm more detail and I might get to use the booster as well as the DC-DC
      Cheers

Thanks for the quick response guys. I'll see how it goes, worst case I might need to wire in a DC charger or fit a booster later.

It looks like they've changed a couple of things regarding the second battery ... to my untrained eye, they appear to have flattened out the problematic air conditioning pipe too.

They have, the spot is flat and open and takes an N70 on a tray.
Ive simply used a plastic tray and standard battery clamps, just the same as the factory location...
          Cheers

Thanks 120D4D, that's what the sparky said too.

Out of interest, any advice on what sort of plug to mount up back? I have an Engel fridge but was going to get a generic cigarette plug flush-mounted next to the factory inverter for flexibility. I've read though that these types of plugs can jiggle loose on long trips and that Engel or merit plugs are preferable.

Also, I was going to get a voltage meter installed for the second battery, I'm guessing the logical place to put this would be with the plug (in the rear), or do people tend to mount them on the dash so they can be monitor charging progress?

For the fridge plugs you can get flush mount enclosures for 50A anderson plugs.

What tray are you guys using? I need one that can handle corrugations so will a normal battery tray work. I have seen where the location is for the 2nd battery and it looks strong. Hopefully get car this wk. What battery are you putting in? AGM's??

                Thanks for any help.

I don't do a lot of hard off road so I'm not too concerned about corrugations. The sparky is going to use a simple tray and clamps for the second battery (which is how the primary battery is secured). I'm putting in a Century deep cycle 105AH battery (not a gel cell, am saving the $).

The big unknown is how efficiently it will charge from the alternator, or whether it will need some sort of booster / DC charger added.

i suggest you read through this thread.
My thoughts based on experience and what is in this thread
Century deep cycle will not like under bonnet temps
DC Dc charger is the option i went for.
I will then have the option in the future to change the battery type or solar backup if parked up for a while

Currently using a Century deep marine pro it has been in for just over a year and had no issues.

Thanks Fred, I'll have another browse (mind you, this thread is pretty technical for the uninitiated like me!)

My set-up is a little different, I have a camper trailer which has a battery in it (charged via Anderson from the Prado or solar when parked, will be adding a DC charger to it). The battery in the Prado will power the fridge during travelling and short overnight stops, for more than one night stops I'll pull the fridge out and power from the camper.

So I'm hoping the second battery under the bonnet will charge adequately via the alternator for my use but there's only one way to find out I guess ...

I have basically the same requirements.
                        Fridge in the back.
charge the caravan batteries while moving from the AUX batt, solar when camped and leave the fridge in the back
if I run the fridge as a freezer maintaining around -15 I get 3 days without moving.
Found that by accident when I forgot to turn the fridge off.

again deep cycle under bonnet will not last.

Picked up the new car yesterday. Service manager confirmed that it is a smart alternator and that I would need a booster to charge the 2nd battery.

So what are my options? DC to DC or is there something else? I am running a 2nd battery under the bonnet to run the fridge in the back of the car. I will also have a 3rd battery in the camper trailer. I have 6 B&S cable running to this connected via a 50amp Anderson plug.

                          Thanks for any help.

Can someone who has a new 2.8 tell me how many wires there are in
the alternator plug and what the colours of them are?

Also has anyone with the new model done any voltage measurements?

                            Cheers

Hi John, as Leigh has posted, you will need to do some voltage measuring to see just what is now the go with the Toyota alternator operation.

You are in Brisbane and I am on the Gold Coast, so I have two suggestion for you, if you are interested.

If you want to bring your new Toyota down to me, I can carry out some NON INTRUSIVE voltage tests and set up a link with Leigh, to to see if we can establish how the new system works.

The other option, if you have a digital multi meter, is for you to measure the voltage at your cranking battery while you are driving.

I have a simple Safety Lead that connects to the terminals of your cranking battery, and then runs into the cab, just run the twin wire in to the cab via the passengers door, while the door is opened.

With the twin wire located in the cab, shut the door on the wire.

The wire has a 1 amp in-line fuse, mounted near the battery and a set of twin screw block terminal in the cab.

You then fit the probes, on your multi meter, to the other side of each of the screw block terminal.

This is something you can either make yourself, or I can post one up to you.

NOTE, this is a far more accurate way to monitor your alternator voltage than using one of the cigarette socket type voltage monitors.
