  • After installing the solar panel yesterday, It looks like with no other load, the batteries are charging nicely.

Though i have installed a single 120w panel, the tool only reports half that. I'm hoping that is due to either
    1. the panels are horizontal, so not at the optimal angle for the sun
    2. the batteries don't need the full power from the charger, so the MPPT is limiting the voltage/current required.

My guess would be a combo of the two. In your second two images (Absorption and Float) the battery will be dictating how much power goes into it and you'll see the charger has let the panel voltage get quite a bit higher there (another clue that there's excess solar energy it doesn't need).

In the first image (Bulk) I think it's the panel that's limiting things. The charger is only able to put 4A into the battery but I assume the charger is capable of a lot more than that, provided it's being sourced with enough power.

      • Hi Steve, and I don’t know if you have tried this, but next time you have a battery that is in need of a charge. Hook your solar reg up to the battery and leave the panel as you did this time.

Then when it has been in the sun for an hour or so, give the panel a good gentle soaking with a hose, for a minute or two, and watch the charge current rise.

It is common for many solar panels to loose as much as 30% of their maximum rated wattage when they are hot.

        • Thanks Tim & dBC,

I've mounted a 120w panel onto my pioneer platform, so it's now a permenant addition

When i get a moment, i'll try the cooling and watch the impact.

          • Howdy partners,

I've got the opportunity to get a battery for free from work as it's no longer needed, just checking to see if it's of any use. I have compared it to some N70 dimensions I found on the net and it's the same. (excuse my ignorance if that's a given haha)

            Any help is appreciated!

            Cheers, Will

            • Mate that appears to be a (heavy) UPS battery and I also note the 100ah@10hr capacity.
Google tells me it likes around 25C so not suited for under bonnet use either.

It's not ideal but I'd await the likes of drivesafe to comment on its ability to be used...

I have a SSB brand 130Ah battery, it's 350l x 180w x 200h which is slightly larger than an N70. It's a snug fit, but it does fit OK in the factory-provided space for the second battery in the 2.8.

Oh man I didn't even think to google the part number, what a goose! Thanks for those extra details there mate. At those temps it's definitely a no-go I would think! You say 'heavy', it's about 5kg more than some others, that's pretty big!
You note the 100ah@10hr capacity, do you mind breaking that down as to what it means exactly?

Also I.C.B, thanks for your input, I'll keep that in mind! Did it give you much grief trying to mount it being that bit bigger?

                  Thanks for your input guys,

                  Will.

Not really, it has a handle on the top so I just slowly slid it in to the spot and fitted a standard battery clamp over it. It was a bit fiddly to get the clamp on because of the tight space but really not that hard. Note I haven't added any after-market battery holder as some do, that might change things if you do.

Sounds easy enough. Did you use an OEM clamp or aftermarket? Also did you brace it to the rad support as some have done? The tray is a tricky one, I wasn't really planning on running one either because from what I've read there hasn't been enough solid reasoning to persuade me to.

IIRC i read in the cracked gaurd thread that there was a design change? But I've skimmed over quite a bit now, and fact and fiction have started to become blurry haha.

                      • I used an after-market clamp with a plastic tray that sits straight in the factory spot ... see attached image (which is the original N70 battery I installed, I have since upgraded to a larger AGM battery).

On the cracked guard issue, from what I have read this was more of an issue with early 150s, the guards in later models were strengthened but like you I don't know how much I've read about this is fact vs. opinion. Overall I decided I didn't need it as my driving is 95% on-road and the off-road I do is usually nothing worse than a gravel road with a camper in tow (so not especially fast or rough). I might have gone for an after-market, braced battery tray if I was regularly driving on dirt and corrugations, or doing a big bash somewhere.

                        Hope this helps.

                        • Hi all
I have a Ritar RA-12-100(S,12v100AH/10HR) on reading specs it says cycle use 14.6-14.8v(25 deg C) is this suitable for an auxiliary battery and what type of isolator should I use.if used under the bonnet what would be the repercussions if it gets a lot warmer than 25 deg under the bonnet.

                              • Hi Guys,

Just wondering where you have installed your CIG/Merit/Engel sockets in the rear cargo area? I have a 2016 VX and the small vacant storage space on the left hand side that most people seem to be using is actually a rear speaker (and Kakadu I think). Main reason I am asking is so I can determine whether I run the cables down the left hand side or right hand side of the vehicle. I plan on running 8B&S dual core from the Aux battery, through the firewall, down the interior side channel and into a fuse box. It will then split out into 2 x sockets for fridge, etc.
