  • UHF Antenna Rear Door Mount

    Hi All,

I'm planning out the install of my UHF and was wondering if anyone has mounted their antenna on the rear door. Something similar to the FJ cruiser mounts.

Has anyone done this? Are there any products out there already?

Maybe I could fold up a bit of steel for the bracket, but I'm not sure there is enough room.

    Thanks.
    Ben

Thinking spare wheel carrier bracket. I'am sure you could make something work utilizing the rear wheel mounting bracket.
    Cheers

Thanks Guys that does look pretty good. It does space the spare wheel out a long way though. Not sure if that would be a problem.

I wonder if I could make something similar out of heavy(ish) plate. I'd ideally like the aerial to be up a little higher as I'm planning on interchanging a small and large mast.

Ours. 10mm or 12mm rod as I recall bent, with two mounts on top. Brackets behind the wheel bolt to the oem wheel mount. No spacer needed.

Not the prettiest, but works great, apart from collecting the odd tree from time to time. We have a 150mm whip for around town. It's rolling around the back of the car somewhere.. Wife put the full whip through a shopping center once and it survived.

Very nice that's great inspiration. Do you have any photos of where it mounts on?

I found some 4mm plate steel that is pretty sturdy. With a few folds I should be able to make something up. I might make a cardboard template this afternoon.

I have started some work. Looks like it should be pretty easy to fold up some plate.

Of course the plate that I have is not big enough (sigh).

Unfortunately no pics of brackets that would be helpful without pulling the spare off. Imagine though, two bits of 30mm x 6mm or 4mm bar (can't remember which..) going straight up from those two bolts at the top. They have a very subtle s bend in them to clear the body and tyre. Nothing more complicated than that really.

                      Something similar to the OP...
                      http://www.diamondantenna.net/k400-38c.html

                      Note: rotates around two axis...

Diamond is a common mount used by amateurs. (but usually with a "UHF" connection rather than the 3/8 thread)

This is my temp solution until i can be bothered making something more permanent,
only down side is you need to take the bracket off to change the tire

Or make one from 8 mm steel and shape to the door behind the spare wheel.

Most antennas have a flying lead. Do you have a cable disconnect somewhere as it looks like a 2 person job to get the spare off because the cable goes through the centre of the rim.

I just undo it and it hangs there, not overly hard, always do it by myself without too much hassle. One day I will move it to behind the tyre.
