  • Prado 150 Stuck in 4 Low

I know this has been asked before but couldnt find any fix on the old thread:

I was testing the 4x4 function on a block of land (the block is flat with some sandy areas). It was having no issues engaging 4 low (i.e. stop the car, push down clutch, move gear to neutral change function), but when trying to switch back to 4 high it was slow to shift and sounded clunky.

I took it out of 4wd and drove it to town, roughly 5km. Once we got back in the car and started the engine an alarm sounded with the 4 low light flashing and the traction control light on. I immediately shut down the car and looked at the manual. After following the procedure to bring the gearing between 4 low and 4 high (i.e. stop the car, push down clutch, move gear to neutral change function) I found it would not move between 4 low and 4 high.

I drove back to the block at a low speed in 2wd once there tried in 4wd to get it to shift between 4 low and into 4 high by following the same procedure on the rough sand/block. It would not shift and the warning lights remained on (but no alarm would sound)

If I left it in 4 high then tried to exit 4 wd into 2 wd the alarm would sound and 4 low light would flash. I also tried reversing and turning (as the manual describes). I was worried the car would be in 4 wd but I had a neighbour come out and look at the car with me, we were able to ascertain that the car was not in four wheel drive. Hence I drove it back to Perth.

So in summary I was able to take it out of 4wd on the low setting but the warning light remains on, it will not shift into 4 high.

Sound like a problem in/with the 4WD/AWD-high/low range actuator attached to the back of the transfer case. You haven't been hard off road and damaged/cracked the actuator case have you?

The Prado is a constant four wheel drive with a transfer case permitting high or low range selection so the only way to take it out of 4WD is to drop one of the tailshafts. Have a read of your owner's hand book or refer to the sticker on the sun visor if you don't believe me.

My mate had this exact problem, it was the transfer actuator and cost him $2400 to get fixed.

Details are in this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...e-won-t-engage

He tried a cheap one from a wrecker but there is a calibration procedure required that meant he couldn't use the one from the wrecker so had to buy a new one.

So all good, turns out it was a switch (?). Will be getting it back tomorrow. Best take it for a proper off road run on the weekend.

SO that didnt last long, took it for a short run (on main roads in the city) and hey whats this, the same warning lights.

So thats the traction, the 4LO flashing and ABS on.

Each of those came on when I started the car. It wont engage/disengage 4WD.

Taking it back to the dealer (again) pretty annoyed now. Any ideas what it could be?

                  Hey Mate,
I know this was a long time ago, but I'm having exactly the same problem with my 2012 150 prado. Would you mind posting what the issue and fix ended up being?
                  Thanks!

Sticky actuator or switch. Try cyclig it a few times, maybe give it a tap underneath on the actuator. They gum up if not used at least once a month i find.

The Prado am having is behaving funny. only in the morning the engine light is on and displaying 4LO and loses power when you switch off ignition and on again it becomes ok. what could be the problem. before I had a diagnosis error code of P0093 which we have fixed.

If your starter battery is close to failing it can result in odd dashboard lights staying on including the 4LO. Mines done it twice to me now over the years, it also reported Crank angle sensor error code. I can only think that once the battery voltage gets to a certain point the ECU gets confused. New starter battery resolved the issue both times.

I had the same warning lights, Slip and Engine solid, and with 4LO flashing. When the fault was present I couldn't engage 4LO or cruise control.
The root cause for me was that a dodgy auto sparky had managed to introduce a second power feed into the brake light circuit.
                              Hope that helps.
