  • TJM Snorkel

I am very disappointed in the latest TJM snorkel. Its design means that it collects air off the car windscreen. After just a few months use I could not believe how much leaf matter etc was collected in the air filter box.
Its design is flawed as the large area of the windscreen acts as a collector so negates one of the main reasons I fitted the snorkel ie to minimise dust etc collection when travelling on unsealed roads etc.

I have this snorkel and after a recent Cape trip found my air filter was no worse than anyone else's on the trip which included safari snorkels and cheap eBay type snorkels.

I had the previous version on my 120 with the head facing forward and I can tell you it never collected anywhere near the amount of rubbish this one does.
This is after only a few thousand kms and no outback driving. A big dissapointment not to think of how much water is splashing into the unit from the wiper action all in all not a well thought out unit.

I've got one and never had a problem with leaves etc. Also never had a problem with water getting in there, even in full Darwin monsoonal rain.

As others have said, I have never had a problem too (in about 2 years). I have driven through a lot of water, dust and mud and never had anything except exceptional performance. However, I don't think I drive through that many leaves really, maybe it is a flaw in certain areas with certain conditions.

I do know one thing, I love the look of it.

Yeah I'm torn between a Safari or the Airtec. I like both. This thread almost changed my mind but others have not had the same issue

This is after a week or so from when i vacuumed the filter box.
I do live in a house with a treed yard so it is compounded but I still maintain that the design is floored as it using the windscreen as a collector.
I wrote to TJM but received no response.

I'm thinking of looking at a Tanami snorkel, made in Brisbane apparently, and half the price, and seem sto be very good quality...definitely not a Chinese version.

I have had the Airtec snorkel fitted to my 150 for almost 5 years now and no issues what so ever with water, dust or tree droppings in the filter box despite parking under trees at work. Honestly only have good things to say about the snorkel.

I am putting an Airtek on my 150. The one that wraps around the top of the windscreen. I had one on exactly the same my 100 series and it was great. Best of all, it didn't get caught on overhanging obstacles like tree branches etc because it didn't stick up like a hook. When I had the 100Ser, (MY 5/00 4.5L petrol auto) I would fill both tanks at the Berrimah lights in Darwin, drive only on the sub tank on the way back to Katherine, 300km away. Without the snorkel I only got 250km from the sub tank and had to switch to the main. With the snorkel, I could make it all the way from Darwin to Katherine on the 50L sub tank.
I hope I get improvements like that by fitting one to my 150 3.0 TD GXL auto.

                      I didn't notice any change @100km/h
Slight improvement @ 80km/h but overall it made no real difference.

I understand that the Safari has proven itself very good but I like the minimalist look of the TJM(with golf style head) on my LC150
My question thought is what happened when it is raining hard? I saw a video that say to keep the drain hole at the bottom the air intake assembly while other say need to sealed it to keep the water from entering...I am confused...

Got this on my 150, never had a problem, yep I sometimes have small leaves like your inside, dad has the safari on his triton and he gets the same amount

As long as the filter is there nothing gets through
