  • Best way to install an insect screen - 150 series with ARB winch ready bull bar

    Hi guys

Have just purchased a 150 Prado and looking for some advice (or a link to previous thread) on the best way to install a simple radiator insect screen. I have the ARB winch ready bar with spotlights. Any suggestions/photos would be much appreciated! Or is there an aftermarket product out there. Don't need anything fancy, just a neat heavy duty shade cloth job will do.

And where do people store their Reese ball mounts in the car.. I am not keen on it floating round the back. Best idea I can come up with at the moment is wrapped in towel stashed tightly under the drivers seat.

    Cheers

    Fred

Heavy duty shade cloth restricts a lot of airflow. You'll need something slightly more open.

ARB do an Insect Screen (Part IS150) - $149.00 fitted. This is an expensive way of going about it though.

I had the steel mesh insect screen left over from my 80 series Cruiser, so I removed the plastic grill from my 150 and zip tied the insect screen to the back of the grill. Have had it there since 2010, no problem with air flow into the motor, and it stops all but the smallest of insects getting through. Stones are also stopped from getting through into the radiator.

        You could try something similar.

As amts stated, heavy duty shade cloth will significantly inhibit air flow. I keep a plastic mesh screen in the rear drawers, but it is only fitted if I encounter a locust plague on the road.

I keep my HR unit in a strong plastic box in the rear to stop it rolling about.

I did similar to yowie, super cheap have alloy screen mesh. I removed the plastic grill and zip tied the cut to shape mesh to the back . . Been on 7 years now no problems with overheating, catches a lot of bugs/bees, just wash off every now and then

I am about to put in some form of screen when I saw this thread.
If shade cloth is not recommended then I suppose ordinary flywire is not good enough either? What is the best size holes for a screen to ensure there is no serious restrictions to airflow yet stops the insects?

If you look at the shade cloth at Bunnings and note the UV protection %, that is roughly equal to airflow blockage.
              http://www.bunnings.com.au/our-range...ps/shade-cloth

I then found this company datasheet and made a spreadsheet for coverage area
              http://www.lincolnsentry.com.au/medi...1370413669.pdf
The number in brackets is the number of strands per inch

Description Strand Dia (mm) % Blockage
              Weather resistant fibreglass mesh (18x14) 0.28 32.2%
              Weather resistant fibreglass mesh (18x16) 0.28 34.0%
              Pool/ Patio enclosure mesh (18x14) 0.33 37.3%
              Sandfly/Tiny insect Protection No-See-Um micro fibreglass mesh (20x20) 0.33 45.2%
Pet protection Pet-D-Fence vinyl coated polyester mesh (11x15) 0.64 55.0%
Pet protection Panther Tuff powder coated Al mesh (14x14) 0.46 44.3%
Pet protection Tufflite powder coated Al mesh (18x15) 0.28 33.1%
Corrosion weather resistant Al mesh (18x16) 0.28 34.0%
              Fire prone SS 316 mesh (18x16) 0.23 28.4%
              Fire prone Bronze mesh (18x14) 0.28 32.2%
So from the above table, the Fire Prone SS316 mesh is the best in terms of best airflow and the Tufflite isn't too bad either.

Just for clarification, % coverage is the opposite of % open area, thus making the smaller % more desirable in this situation?

I've changed % coverage to % blockage in the table for clarity.

Looks ideal. Would be interesting to see what the % blockage is for comparison.

I did have plain old fibreglass flyscreen behind the grill and down in front of radiator. Only use it now when going near spinifex country.

I've had aluminium flyscreen mesh in the front the AC condenser since I bought the Prado in '08, I've never had overheating issues in 40+ deg C temps and towing. Plus I have HID spots and a winch in front of there too. I do have engine monitoring and I keep an eye on the actual temp not the doughy gauge in the dash.
