Humm, I understand the convenience of in dash maps, but at what stage does the cost of upgrading them is way over the fact that after market external units are cheaper more up to date etc. etc.
D4D. How long will it last?

      • Slight variation on the topic, but does anyone know if the voice is upgraded with a new map pack? I ask this because my brand new 2017 GXL has a speech problem. She doesnt say "To" she says "T", so it sounds like she has a north country English accent! "in 150m, turn left inT' smith street".

such a little thing, but after the kids all stopped impersonating the car and having a laugh about it, it really does sound like there is something wrong with it.
        anyone else seen this?

        • I cant test for you as I am in the UK but I do think that the voice files are the only thing not locked down by Toyota.
It certainly wont do any harm to try adding more voices, there are many available for iGo on various GPS forums. Have a look in the
iGO/content/voice folder of your card where you will see the existing couple of voice zip files, the ones called TTS are text to speech.

Thanks John, I will have a look around for other voice files and see what happens. It is such a trivial thing, but I cant believe it got passed QC, given how good these devices are these days. maybe mine actually has a problem. the Prado is heading back in for its 1 month checkup soon so i will ask them and let you know if it gets fixed.

            • Hi all
Just picked up my 2017 Prado today. Quick question is it worth changing the system to a kenwood DDX917WS ( Apple car ply and android one ) due to the map system on the phones is always updated free.

              Thank you

              • I haven't posted here for a while, but having lived with the Prado for about a year now I though I would put some thoughts down. Overall I'm very happy with the sound of the system - we listen to a lot of music and talking books, and the sound is more than acceptable and clear to everyone in the car.

The hands free for the phone (mine is an apple) is clear and works well.

Sometimes the phone and radio will not pair (normally if bluetooth contact is broken, eg take the phone away from the car when running) and to get it to work I have to turn the car off and on again.

We run our books and music off memory sticks - I have put a small USB hub in off the USB port, and have a 64 GB stick of music and a 32 GB of books. This then means from the touch screen we have USB1 and USB2, so we can select books or music (especially handy if you are shuffling, and don't want books coming up while music is on).

The menu system/play order for songs is bonkers. If you go artist-album to select an album/book, it seems to select a totally random order for the songs/tracks. This is especially annoying if trying to listen to a book! I have tried to work out where it is getting its order from by looking at the file metadata etc, but no idea. However, if you select by album, the order is correct. We also worked that by touching the USB symbol when something is playing you go straight to the track listing, which helps if things are out of order.

We have just completed a 1 month 8000 km trek from Perth to Alice across the middle and back via the Gawler ranges and the Nullarbor. One pleasant surprise was how many of the outback 4WD tracks are in the database - we were never relying on the GPS, but it was amusing to see which roads were in there. Franin, I don't know what the plans are for your car, but having the maps in memory as opposed to relying on coverage is handy (and safer) in the bush.

That said, the maps are frustratingly out of date and I don't see why we should have to pay $300 every 2 years to keep them up to date.

I never use the GPS if I am in a hurry or cannot afford to be stuffed around - I use my phone perched on the dash. A number of times I have used the car GPS and google maps off my phone. Now to be fair the phone is a live database with traffic feedback (and relies on coverage), but the difference in the routes they select is at times comical. Especially as the database is out of date.

I also spent some time in the menu system and found different things that can be turned on etc. Notable ones are 4WD tracks, and traffic camera alerts. Not that I speed, but it is handy knowing when to make sure you are below the limit

So overall sound is good, menus frustrating till you work out the issues, and GPS unreliable.

                • Thanks for that. I’ve learned if I plug my phone in the USB port it plays the apple music quite well. I didn’t realise it accepts messages as well so not a bad feature to have. I’m going to hang onto it for awhile to see how it all goes.

                  • Last night had a drive to see if the navigation maps covered the roe hwy merge with tokin hwy, well it didn’t. Funny thing is the Toyota link map looking at it this morning shows it does. My car is brand new picked up 2 days ago. What is the latest update of the map that were up to?

                    Thanks

                    • I was "given" the latest iGO map that Toyota had when it was released almost a year ago. It was a 2015 map which was as up to date as you could get from Toyota at the time. I will return to WA in a couple of weeks and can look up the details for you then, but I doubt there is a newer version yet. It took complaints to consumer protection and a senator before Toyota would supply what they considered to be an up to date version. However try navigating to Perth airport with this "new" map and see how you get on!
I don't understand what you mean by Toyota link map, if you mean the search facility Toyota link provides, it must use google maps or similar to find places. The results are good but the let down is when you send them to your navigator.
I remember searching for Masters store at Mandurah, when I sent the result to my head unit it showed the location as the middle of a field as the Toyota map was so out of date.
This is what makes me so mad about what Toyota expect their customers to endure, people on here have said "it is a first world problem" but why should we have to put up with outdated information when Google maps have current road closures etc and a smartphone can easily have Here maps or similar which are up to date. Garmin and Tomtom supply free updates which are reasonably current so why not Toyota?
If only Toyota allowed mirroring from phone to head units in Australia there wouldn't be an issue. As I have asked before how do they get away with it?

The Toyota link map shows the proper merge with tokin and roe hwy but when using the built in gps there is no road. I rang customer assist and they told me could be a glitch but after reading through all the posts I don’t think customer assist have any idea what’s going on. Just curious on the ETA of the next update? And who can I call to find out as well? I rang spare
Parts on Friday and the salesman didn’t have much of a clue regarding the map system.

                        Thank you

                        • Yes I am not at all surprised that customer assist or a salesman didn't have much of a clue.
I used to pester the "guest experience centre" they should know the date of the next update, but getting the proverbial blood from a stone was easier than extracting any useful information from them. They told me that it takes 12-18 months to "integrate a new map to a vehicle" which of course is complete bollocks.
Have you checked what version your maps are? I wrote on page 2 of this thread:
"I wonder if everyone could check to see what your maps are please? It is dead easy: from the map screen press, menu, more, help, about, more, content, maps."
My original map supplied in a December 2015 GXL was 2013 Q4. I as posted above a "new" card was supplied to me last December which from memory was 2015 Q3 or Q4 (sorry I cant check yet) I accepted this as the map was the same age as my vehicle and it was the best I was going to get from Toyota.
I am very interested to see what you have been supplied with in a 2017 vehicle, I suspect it will be the same, in other words a two years old map in a new car!

                            Hi there
                            Mine shows Australia 2015 Q4

I picked up my car on Tuesday with a build date 11 August 2017 and 9/2017 next to VIN Nimber.
So it is a bit of a joke that the map system is outdated. I don’t understand why can’t they mirror Toyota Link?
Any recommendations on who to call tomorrow? I would like this sorted.

                            • For what it's worth I've been running 2017 Q1 iGO8 maps in my aftermarket GPS/DVD system since June, so the latest maps are available.
Do you have access to the card with the maps on it? If so I can send you a link to the maps file and you can update them yourself.

                              • They wont allow android auto or apple car play or any other mirroring in their head units as that would prevent them charging over $300 for a two year old map.
They provide Toyota link expecting customers to be satisfied when as discussed the search for a place function finds somewhere but then cant display on the map because anywhere new does not exist.
They used to offer a music streaming service called Pandora but support has been withdrawn from the Australian market so Toyota have replaced this with (you guessed it) absolutely nothing.
The person that I had most success with was called Braydon Hazell his official title is Guest Interaction Manager at [email protected]
He posted the sd card to me after telling me in an email last November that:
"The part number you refer to in your email (86271-0E173) is the Q4 2015 mapping version and is the very latest version available. This version was only released late last month."
My selling dealer Big Rock Toyota were useless, they wanted me to return the Prado so that they could fit the sd card, as if this was some feat of engineering only possible to do by an authorised dealer. The one they got after much fuss was a year older anyway so I lost confidence in them.
Best of luck in contacting Toyota Australia, you are welcome to tell them of my case and I hope you get a result. Unfortunately I doubt there is a new version yet and even when a new one becomes available it will be a 2016 Q4 which will make it over a year out of date when it is first released.
I hope that you can understand my frustration with Toyota over this issue, you would think it would be simple to overcome with say a video interface or new head unit.
Unfortunately Toyota deliberately removed the GVIF socket in mid 2015 preventing any interface from working. I have contacted many Chinese suppliers of new head units, all say they are made for the left hand drive market and/or will not work in vehicles with factory navigation. I even ordered a head unit taking a gamble that I could make it work and the supplier insisted that I cancel the order as they were sure that it wouldn't.
