Latest Maps Version for Prado Navigation System

For what it's worth I've been running 2017 Q1 iGO8 maps in my aftermarket GPS/DVD system since June, so the latest maps are available.
Do you have access to the card with the maps on it? If so I can send you a link to the maps file and you can update them yourself.

What year Prado do you have and did it have factory navigation as standard?
I ask because I am very interested in which after-market head unit you are using. If it is a Chinese running android then the main iGO binary is usually a changed version which allows you to run any readily available maps. Toyota have very cleverly hidden the main iGO program in the unit with only the map and bits and pieces on and locked to the SD card.

I have the 2011 VX and didn't want to pay $2500 extra for the Toyota GPS/DVD. Instead I spent $600 on a Chinese (everything is made in China) unit running WinCE. I have not had any problems with this unit since I purchased it in Aug 2011.
The SD card is accessible from the front of the unit and I update maps and POI, speedcams, etc every 12 months or so.
Maps are freely available from a couple of easily found websites, and the only files you really need to update are the map files (.fbl .fda .ftr .hnr)

I have the 2011 VX and didn't want to pay $2500 extra for the Toyota GPS/DVD. Instead I spent $600 on a Chinese (everything is made in China) unit running WinCE. I have not had any problems with this unit since I purchased it in Aug 2011.

Starbuck, do you still have full functionality with the wheel controls etc?

Yes. Everything works as it should on the steering wheel. The USB input on the console is not connected to the unit, but I have two USB inputs in the glovebox instead. The console USB is now permanently wired (to the 2nd battery) as a USB power supply for charging phones, etc.

I’ve sent a message to nng.com which I noticed deals with iGo primo maps ( it actually is shown in my map system ) They have maps going to 2016 which includes Australia. Im hoping to find out what the deal is and if we’re able to upgrade.

Well I hope you have better luck with them than I did, as I contacted them as soon as I realised that Toyota sell new vehicles with two year old maps but unfortunately the answer at the time was no.
I am sure that you have seen that GPS forums have links to iGO maps for Australia which can be downloaded. The most recent is 2017 Q2.

Sorry I really should have explained myself properly. All I meant was that GPS forums like GPS underground and GPS power have downloadable maps which work in a version of iGO that has a changed (hacked) .exe program. These programs can be put on your phone and are found on Chinese made head units.
Toyota lock their head units by giving no access to the main program, the maps on the card are locked with licence and tied to the cards CID which (usually) can not be changed.
I hope this makes sense, in short there is no way to put a new map on a Toyota head unit without buying a card from them.
Prado owners are not the only ones moaning about this, have you looked at the Toyota owners forum where there are several threads complaining about the out of date and expensive maps.

Thanks for your help John. I’ve gone to Toyota forums and posted there as well. I guess I’ve reached a dead end. I’m going to wait and see what happens hopefully we should see something soon.

Hi all I’ve been directed to gps forums where the 2017 Q2 maps are available to download question is has anyone tried it to see if it actually works on a 2015 + Toyota ?

Yes it will not work for the reasons explained above, you cant load maps from a more recent Toyota card (if there was one) either as the maps are locked with a licence (.lyc) file. You cannot clone a card as the software is locked to the original card's CID number which is (almost) impossible to change.
Obviously if this were easy Toyota wouldn't be able to charge a ridiculous amount for their out of date maps.
The idiotic thing is in my opinion that owners let them get away with it.
My Chinese head unit is on it's way and I will be posting all about it, good or bad once I get the chance to play about with it. The tracking number says that it has "arrived in the local post office" two days ago but as we know what "WA" stands for I am not holding my breath about getting it soon!

I had another check with my dealer parts dept. (who seems to tell it how it is) and the latest maps in their list is still v23 from Oct 2016.
He is going to check the version in the latest 2018 models. Has anyone got a 2018 model and can check the maps version in that?

Funny when speaking to Toyota customer care they make me seem like I’m the only one complaining about it. I’ve been tempted a number of times if changing my unit but then have realised ( brand new car ) they have a setting in the unit which controls my locks and interior lights. By changing the unit not sure what affect it can have to the settings.
