  • Yes I did update the .spc file to Q3 but I think it still only shows 1 on the Kwinana Fwy, of course you can add them yourself but obviously you need to know where they are!
I wont bore everyone to death with the details but I have put a lot of effort into getting the sys.txt files to show alerts like cameras, school zones and things like high accident areas to give spoken warnings how I want them. By default they seem to either not announce anything at all or repeat to an annoying degree.

    • They should of added them on these updates By now. It’s slack on their part. Well at least we don’t have to pay $568 for every upgrade by know with these updates we’re at $1500 if we went through Toyota. I had to turn off a few audio warnings eg railroad tracks ahead etc

      • Hi All,

sorry to dig up an old thread.

I have just purchased a 2012 Toyota Prado Kakadu - the GPS software is version 18 (quite old).

I am just wondering if anyone has fitted am "aftermarket gps / head unit" in replace of the original one on the 2012 Kakadu?

If so can you can get the front & rear parking cameras to still work on the "aftermarket gps / head unit" & what "aftermarket gps / head unit" are people fitting.

        Thanks Andrew

        • Mate there's numerous threads around here on that topic- Doing a google search and adding "pradopoint" will yield best results. There's two main camps for upgrading your headunit. You can go for a chinese android unit, or a brandname "dumb" unit that runs android auto/ apple car play. The cameras can still work providing that you are prepared to do a little fiddling with electronics, toyota cameras run 5V whereas most of the aftermarket ones you'll get from china are 12 V. It's worth doing some reading to find out what you want to do and what the best solution will be for your needs.

            • For those who use the USB input to the Prado stereo, it has some issues. (ours is a 2016 GLX)

I have put a small USB hub in our console, and have 2 x 64 GB memory sticks in it - one with all our music and one with talking books (we do a lot of long drives). That way when you select source on the stereo, 2 USB icons come up and I can select music or books, rather than having them all mixed together.

However, the track order kept coming up as all jumbled if you select album. This is particularly annoying for talking books, as the chapters are all jumbled. If you select artist/album, they come up in the correct order. Stop the car and re-start it and the track resumes where it stopped, but the order is all jumbled again - unless you stop the track, find it by Album/artist, then re-start the track. PITA.

I made sure the tracks were names with 01-trackname, 02-trackname etc still no joy. Look in windows, order is all correct. Looked in the file metadata for clues but nothing.

So I spent some time researching why the talking book MP3s on the stereo are all jumbled up - harks back to DOS days, and the firmware that MP3 players use. Basically lists them by the date copied onto the memory stick - and Windows does not copy them in order, so you get a dog's breakfast of the hidden file copy date. And the issue is not uncommon - lots of car stereos have the problem, and even a circa 2010 Samsung mobile phone that I set up as an MP3 player jumbles the tracks.

But where there is a problem and the Internet you can find a solution. Basically the stereo sorts based on the dates the files are copied - and if you do a large copy and paste in Windows, it doesn't copy them in logical order. So after research I down loaded "DriveSort" from the web (free). And sure enough it showed the files in the same jumbled order as the stereo. But the program can then quickly sort all the tracks on the memory stick to the correct/logical order. Re-sort took about 5 minutes.

BTW I copied all the sorted files back onto my main server - but windows randomised them again. So the USB sticks are fine, car stereo is fine but I have to re-run DriveSort each time I add files (but it is quite easy/quick).

              For the anal amongst us.

              • Just spoke to local dealer re map update.
Chap says Toyota are coming up with a new deal which will allow updates over the net.
Will require purchase of a new updatable SD card. Cost unknown, due to be released in a couple of weeks.
Apparently they are at last doing something about what is the most complained about item on all their vehicles!
He recommended following up with him as they will not make a big announcement.

                    • I have had the same issues with my Whereis software. Toyota gave me a lot of hog wash about the disc being in its slot....oh yes... where is the slot.... they never showed it to me. Then i was told that it was A$300 at the time in 2015.... It has not been updated since new and now the damned thing is worse than ever. I did purchased a portable GPS and now with the smart phones most of them have a GPS. I think that Toyota and Whereis have a lot to do to update those GPS whhose should be FREE OF CHARGE since the vehicle are far from cheap Hey???? Food for thoughts Toyota and Whereis.....
