I wish I had found this forum before.
I have been battling with Toyota Australia, or guest experience centre or whatever they call themselves since the beginning of December when I bought my new Prado only to discover the estate where I live built three years ago does not exist according to the navigation system.
As a post above says the maps are made by "HERE" and date from 2013 Q4

I wonder if everyone could check to see what your maps are please? It is dead easy: from the map screen press, menu, more, help, about, more, content, maps.

I have been constantly passed backwards and forwards between Toyota Australia and the dealer, neither know the answer to the simple question "when will an update be available"
At present consumer protection in WA who agree that "selling a new vehicle with out of date navigation is unacceptable" have told me that they have heard back from Toyota after two months of asking to say that "I will get a new version when it becomes available"
I will not be holding my breath as nobody knows when or what will be available. The dealer thinks part number PZQ 6000250 is current, possibly this is version 21. He says he has heard there is a part number PZQ 6000750 coming but doesn't know when.

I do not wish to bore you all to death but I think there is more to this saga than at first seems likely. I say this because the older V20 V21 etc maps were made by "Whereis" company. The new Prado uses iGO software and "HERE" maps.
I have spoken to HERE who told me that "they have no contact with Toyota and they have no map updates planned for Toyota".
Are the new micro sd card maps made by Whereis? if so will they work in iGO software?
It is my opinion that the Australian market is regarded as a soft touch by Toyota, they could not and do not get away with treating customers like this in Japan or Europe or the USA where online updates are available.

One last thing, even if the new maps were available the price is an absolute rip off. A Garmin or Tomtom would not cost much more than an update and they include free updates.
To the poster above who asked about copying, (I think) this is prevented by Toyota locking the card's CID to the unit.

I have been researching about this map update topic and come to the conclusion that map updates will never be offered for vehicles like mine that use iGO software and HERE maps.
I will explain why I think this, I would love to be proved wrong, can anyone do that?

Toyota have announced a product for smart phone integration as they will not have Apple's Car Play or Android Auto in their vehicles. They don't want to miss out on the revenue from ripping customers off after all. This product is called "smartdevicelink" all one word.

More importantly HERE mapping company previously owned by Nokia, who took over Navteq has been acquired on 4th December by a consortium of German car makers Audi, BMW, and Daimler for $2.5 billion.
Do you think Toyota will be getting map updates from them? I think not and current owners will just be forgotten as Toyota already have their money.

I am not really impressed with the current gps in the new Prado seems to be 50m behind where I actually am.

I have a 'new' GXL with sat nav - delivered in August 2015.
My Australia map as shown on the GPS is 2013.Q4 and is (c) HERE.
The documentation I received in the glove box when I purchased the car was for WHEREIS version 20 AUS.

That is interesting, I have searched my navigation and multimedia handbook and cant see any reference to the map manufacturer. Section 6 from page 189-244, where did you find whereis mentioned in your documents?

Can anyone tell me what mapping software was used by older head units that had whereis maps?
Will the current head units supplied with iGO software and HERE maps work with whereis maps?

It isn't in the manual. There was a clear zip lock bag with a Toyota parts label on it (TOEA1431).
In the bag was a small 12 page booklet describing the Whereis version 20 AUS map data.
I'm guessing that the SD card was also originally included in the bag but that had already been installed by the dealer.

Thank you so much for pointing this out, I had not noticed that I have exactly the same lurking in my glove box !!
The booklet however talks about a "disk" no mention of an SD card, the mystery deepens, at least for me.
So to sum up we have a Toyota fitting kit TOEA1431 including a piece of cardboard with a licence agreement on it, this according to an A4 sheet also in the bag should be stuck in the vehicle. This clearly shows whereis maps yet the unit has HERE maps installed.

The booklet quoted above suggests whereis web site for updates, but as posted earlier in this thread there have been no updates available since 2010 wtf is going on???

Thanks for confirming, looks like we all have the same crap, wtf are Toyota playing at?

Perhaps everyone with the problem could contact:

Toyota Guest Experience Centre Ph: 1800 869 682 (Mon to Fri 8.30am - 5:30pm AEST)

Ask them why we have a whereis fitting kit in our new vehicles yet HERE maps installed? Also "how are Toyota going to get map updates from HERE now they are owned by a German car consortium"?
Lastly why does this happen only in Australia? I bet you wont get any answer!

Something I just noticed on the website I provided to a link earlier is the fact there are 2 different formats provided. If you look carefully v20 is on the SD card but 21 and 22 are only supplied on DVD. If your head unit is from the GXL you will only have access to the sdcard version whereas VX and Kakadu have a DVD player and therefore can have V22. I will be able to verify this on Thursday when I pickup my car (as long as the dealer doesn't stall me again).

I don't think that link says what make the maps are, only the version. I checked out the Kakadu multimedia here http://www3.toyota.com.au/prado/feat...ite-navigation and the head unit looks identical to mine with both a DVD and micro sd card.
Perhaps you mean an extra DVD player in the rear which the GXL doesn't have? anyway I do hope you get your car when promised and that you have up to date maps supplied with it.
Unfortunately I fear that you will be in the same position as the rest of us, with the dealer not knowing or able to find out anything from Toyota.
Let's hope you don't need to navigate to Perth international airport or any similar road upgrades.
