  • New Calendar Format & Competition Announcement

    Hi Members,

Running the calendar photo competition for a few years now has been great with some amazing images being entered. Generally calendar orders have been very low with even a fair percentage of financial members not ordering.

The original concept of running the competition towards the end of the year was to allow images from the years travel to be entered and to quickly send it to production and for delivery in the first couple of weeks of January. This has proved to be an issue both from a production point of view as printers take annual leave and in chasing up high resolution images to include after announcing the winners.

Last years calendar was quite late - for which I take responsibility. As an apology for those that did order I included a free PradoPoint stubby holder.

In light of the issues above, I'm announcing a new format for the calendar.

    PradoPoint 2016/2017 Calendar
    • the calendar will run for the financial year (1 July to 30 June)
    • photos from the previous Christmas and Easter holidays can be included at a time when people are not on leave themselves
    • the ordering window will be from the start of the competition up until early June giving members enough time to order

    Competition
    • will run over a period of months (April - May) giving members a fair chance to enter
    • different categories will be opened at different dates (hopefully providing some interest across all categories)
    • in addition to the existing winning prizes, winning images will be featured on PradoPoint (each for one month)

    Financial Members
    • the 2015 calendar ran to the end of February
    • each annual membership entitles you to one free calendar (the next one that goes to print after you register)
    • if you joined between February and May 2015 your membership will be due for renewal before you receive your first calendar - please contact me.

I hope that for the reasons mentioned above new format seems reasonable.

Start organising your photos, the competition will start soon.

As a side note, we are currently speaking with a very well known 4WD industry member about further rewards, prizes and incentives for our members. More on that as it comes to light.

Thanks for being part of this great community,
    Aaron

Well changes are often a good thing! More time to vote is definitely good IMO.

May I ask if the voting issue has been/will be fixed? Ie hidden on an instructions page it would say rate 1 to 5 but it's not clear whether 1 was best or 5 was best. I'm not trying to pick bones - it's just pointless to vote if it's not dead-easy for voters to see the correct way to vote.

Also, personally, I'd love to see a refresh of the categories. I've always felt there should be a "hardcore" or similar category (ok, I'm a bit biased here - but it's a valid category for 4wd enthusiasts!). Is there a whoops / accident category?

haha well not really for me - but they're always great to see!

My favourite one wouldn't pass the requirements anyway - low resolution (typical) and despite being a close call, it turned out all ok

A refresh of categories sounds good. Lets get a list of suggestions here and then we can vote on them.

I will ensure the voting instructions are very clear.

Looking at previous years, these categories worked well with quality submissions so good to keep as is:

                        1. Beach
                        2. Desert
                        3. Groups/Convoy
                        4. Sunset/Sunrise

These could be expanded or combined, to increase submissions within a theme.

                        5. Mud - expand to "Mud/Rainforest"
                        6. River - expand to "Rivers/Crossings/Bridges"
                        7. Snow - combine with flood/rain/storm making "Snow/Rain/Storm" - both receive very few submissions but occasionally they're very calendar worthy.
                        8. Trouble/Recovery - expand to "Recovery/Hardcore/Extreme" - quality recovery photos are rare, so add hardcore scenes (which has always been a gap in the calendar) and between the two there's bound to be something great.

These don't seem to work well, so could be replaced if we find alternatives:

                        * Bush/Rainforest - many submissions but mixed up with mountains, mud, bridges, flowers, flex shots, campsites. Simply lacking theme.
                        * Wildlife - very rare to have calendar quality and worthy content.

This would leave us needing 3 new categories:

New category: "Camping Scenes" - For those great camp fire photos or your Prado+tent/caravan in the most amazing place you ever stayed.
New Category: "Other/Amazing/Artistic" - only for what doesn't fit into other categories, such as those rare animal shots, flowers, etc
                        New Category: "Mountain/Valley Views" ???

Anyone else have suggestions of new categories?
