  • Could it be my altinator

    Hello boys ,
    09 1kd,
Still can't get my problem solved with my dash lights on, abs and handbrake lights , and speedo not working , my mechanic has had a scan gauge on the vehicle fault code C1306 comes up indicating sensor power supply, after all checkes he can't find any faults checked against list and pointing to ABS unit, managed to get one cheap , and just the same problems

He has had the scan gauge on an other Prado that's working fine all the readings are the same on both vehicles except for alternator voltage which is up and down on mine 15 / 12.4 fluctuating up and down, the only thing he thinks it might be now is the alternator???
Only reasoning is from the old cars if you had lights staying on in the dashboard it was invariably the alternator.
    Appreciate any input.
    Cheers Alan.

Give this to your mechanic, makes it reasonably simple.

Hi Alan. Yes, your alternator is definitely kaput. Based upon your voltages, it may have nuked the battery as well.

If alternator voltage is all over the place do you have a booster diode installed,
like any device they can develope intermittant faults so if you do have one fitted
try swapping it out with a fuse, if booster not fitted try replacing the ALT-S fuse.

IF none of the above alternator voltage regulator or other alternator
          fault like a faulty clutch.

Hi Mozz, thanks for that, my mechanic did pick up the fault C 1306 and followed procedure to check and was what it was supposed to be doing ? Will pass YOUR check chart to him for comment ,

I must say he has been trying and hasn't charged me for his time and changing module and brakes etc.
            Cheers Alan.
PS I did mention in a previous post I did have a quick short trying to find a spot to mount my second battery solenoid, put a hole in fuel filter , could have been a contributing factor.

No booster fitted will look at that fuse was going to take the alternator of and take it to auto spark shop to save a bit but might have to take vehicle in for check ???
              Cheers Alan.

its not your alternator bud, check all the fuses one of the ECM power fuses is blown, its a common fault especially if you have used a trailer and reversed lately.

If the fuse is blown put a new one in and leave the vehicle turned off for 30 min

See the fuses for ABS 30 and 40 amp square type as a posed to blade type , all fuses ok, can't spot the ALT - S fuse Leigh , but am pretty sure my mechanic has done this , pulling his hair out actually.

Only hitched caravan up to check lights and indicators all was good .

ALT-S is located in the engine bay fuse box.

Nothing else but an alternator problem will cause the voltage to go as high as 15v

Completely understand that but could it be my problem with lights on and speedo

Leigh , found the ALT fuse 140 watt just got in and it's dark now but very hard to come out , looks like it separates from internals but can't get it out will try tomorrow but it doesn't look blown .
                        Thanks .

Voltage at 15VDC? That's an alternator issue. Not saying you don't have multiple problems... But you at least have an alternator problem. Mind you, those are the same lights that come on with an alternator issue also. I know it doesn't make sense, but when you look at the wiring diagram of how its all connected, it'll make sense then.

Thanks for that , got an auto electrician coming to check alternator then take it from there ,
                            Will post findings.
                            Cheers Alan.

It actually sounds more specifically that one of the diodes in the trio is going open circuit. Note: these are different diodes then main output diodes.

But it could be a few different things within the alternator.
