  • Prado GX KDJ150R - Manual Gearbox Oil

    Hi all,

    The Toyota Transfer Gear Oil LF SAE 80W-90 GL4 recommended for my model Prado's gearbox and transfer case is over priced so after extensive research and put in Caltex Easy Shift Manual Transmission Fluid SAE 75w-90 API GL-4 which is to spec and at a reasonable price.

    However, I have found over the past year of driving the gear changing to be slightly knotchy. Can anyone recommend another gear oil which is to the same Toyota's specs but with a bit more viscosity as I am getting ready to change out gearbox and transfer case oils again and want to try a different oil. I looked at Fuchs but can't find any to the Toyota recommended specs of GL4.

    I live in Darwin and it is a very hot climate here.

    Thanks to anyone who has any experience in this area and answers my query.

    i always add some nulon to it when i change and it's smooth as silk at 231,000k's

      I use whatever they recommend for the 120 Prado, it's the same 6 speed gear box and I add Nulon additive at the same time. I found Nulon oil smoothshift in the right grade is the smoothest. I change it every 40,000km.

          Thanks for your replies fellas.

          #############, I wouldn't put in that oil as it is GL5, my car requires GL4, but I am certainly going to use the G70.

          I think the Nulon Smoothshift with the G70 is the go, was going to use the Fuchs Sintopoid LS75W90 but a bit pricey. Still a bit confusing as the Penrite PRO GEAR 75W-85 can be used in the gearbox but they say they have no recommendation for the transfer case. Toyota book saying what goes in the gearbox goes in the transfer case with their Toyota Transfer Gear Oil LF SAE 80W-90 GL4.

          Has anyone used the PRO GEAR GL-5 75W-85 for rear and front differentials? Seems to come up to spec for my manual GX Prado. I was under the impression that you had to use the Toyota stuff. Must be thousands of garages out there working on Prados not using the Toyota stuff as it is so expensive.

              Have you priced up the Toyota genuine oil? It might be competitively priced.

                  Hi Great Dane,
                  How did it end up going for you changing over the oil and what did you use ine the end?
                  Just about to do Prado and I used to use the nulon on my ute without any dramas so just seeing if you were happy with the results.
