  • Timing Belt due for a change - should i go?

    Hi

The service sticker on my second hand 2011 Prado diesel (260K) engine says the timing belt is due for a change at 258K, can anybody tell me if this is significant and something I need to get done asap, or should I wait until it fails?

If so, is this significant? any ideas on what this will cost?

    thanks
    Jason

gets done at 150000 then 300000
    maybe it was done early
if it fails then you are up for $$$$$$$$
get it done now including tensioner and roller $150 parts 1 hour to do

    cheers

also might be a good time to check water pump, valve clearances and injectors/seats if you dont know the service history

You certainly do not want to wait until failure unless you want your valves and pistons to have a physical meeting.
Just had mine done, timing belt kit (inc tensioner) $300 for genuine and water pump $98. Full cost for service, including air filter, oil change and fuel filter change was $798.

When i did my timing belt i set my reminder early to match the next coolant change, not a huge cost to do the belt when doing the coolant and pump again.

yes i changed mine at 140k and although the belt looked good the roller was loose and rattling.
i will certainly do mine at 100k intervals
            cheers

I'm a bit worried as mine is at 157K. I'm wondering if there would be some warning light or it would suddenly cause the car stop working.

What model do you have? On my TD150 at 150,000km a light came on that says 'T-belt'. It is automatically set to turn on at 150,000km regardless of your belt condition. If your belt were to break then your car may still run but there is an extremely high chance that your valves will get smashed by your pistons causing $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ of damage. Best bet is to check your service manual, it tells you in there when to change it

Mine is 120 2005 Grande Petrol. I'll check if previous owner has replaced it somehow but I doubt it. I heard rumor saying that there are a number of high-mileage cars with a timing belt that has never been changed.

You're right on that, there are several vehicles with the timing belt never changed. but for the sake of $300 to protect your 20K+ investment...

V6 uses a timing chain, relax no need to change.

Hey team, I've just been quoted the following, do you think this is reasonable or should I go somewhere else?

                              "Hi Tim,
The estimate for the Prado timing belt kit and water pump with fresh coolant is $1280.
                              Many thanks,
                              xxxxxxxx"
