  • Ratlle from a 2016 2.8 Prado D-4D Auto

Hi Guys, been a bit frustrated for a few weeks. I bought a 2.8 Prado in January. Recently I was driving it with the window up because it's getting cold now. But I've found some noise coming form the right side of the bonnet. It only happens when the engine is around 1400-1600rpm at low speed(30km-50km) especially when climbing or accelerating. Nothing happened with engine running when it's in parking so I guess it could be some vibration. And the noise is like some plastics or thing metal shaking or clicking together. Brought the car back to dealer once, they tried the car and noticed the noise but didn't find out the reason. Will bring it back for another long time so that they can look at it again.

Anyone has got the same or similar problem? Really concerned...

My 2.8 has same annoying rattle sound as your deacribed. It happens when i drive 70kmh / 1400rpm during night time cold temp driving but all good in day time +30c.This is also well known problem in D4D 3.0 prado. Do a search in pradopoint keyword" drone noise" or " rattle" you will find a lot of discussion on it. Please keep us updated with dealer' s respond.

Would you say it sounds a little bit like a bird chirping? I asked my dealer about this also and he said its to do with the injectors adjusting when your engine has started to warm up. Does it eventually stop?

On my 2010 GXL, the dealer was able to solve it by screwing in the guard above the front right wheel. I think its some part of the black plastic in the wheel well rattling. I was able to temporarily solve it by putting bluetac in between the plastic plates.

No,it's actually sounds like a piece of plastic or very thin metal penal vibrating. It's pretty much like resonate because it only shows up when the engine is at around 1400rpm to 1600rpm when you put your foot on the pedal to accelerate. Out of that engine range, there's nothing. Will bring the car back to dealer this week. Hopefully they can sort it out. I've heard a lot about some rattle or noise from this forum about the 3.0 D4D from the RHS. But haven't seen any 2.8 ones with this problem. So frustrated because it's there.

Mine gets the same one. I have been told its the steel gauze plate in the air cleaner box.
Apparently need to silicone it to stop it from vibrating

Is your one the new 2.8 engine? I saw they checked that metal plate in the air box last time.

If it was the metal plate in the air box, it should be Toyota. Is the noise gone? What they have done to fix it?

Mate, I had this exact issue, and I'm trying to tell you how it was fixed for me.

For a 2 second temp fix (and to see if it works for you) jam something about the size of a marble (I used blutack so it wouldn't move much) in between the two plastic guards above the front right wheel, as per this photo. This immediately stopped my 1500rpm vibration. For a permanent fix, the dealer screwed those plates in as per this photo

Whereas on the passenger side, they still have the push studs (or whatever they are called)
It permanently stopped my 1500RPM vibration. (2010 GXL)
