    Hi guys. A bit update for the noise issue. I went to the dealer today. Two service men took the car for a drive and found the problem is the air intake pipe which goes into the front guard. With heavy load onto the engine, the vibration will cause it to beat the penal. But that part is back order so it won't get fixed until next Thursday. I hope their theory is right so that it doesn't annoy me any more. I'll come back for more update here. They said it's kind of a common problem with the Prado.

      Yes, very common with the 150 series that is.

        The rattle/drone issue is also found on my 2016 Prado purchased a couple of weeks ago. Symptoms include:
        * Rattle and drone can be felt through rev range 1500~2000rpm when car is running;
        * It can hardly be sensed when the car is standing still (by shifting to N and pressing the pedal while car is parking);
        * It is not obvious within 5~10 minutes after engine is ‘cold’ started after overnight parking;
        * While driving, rattle and drone is gone after the rev is increased over 2000rpm (by downshifting the gear using manual mode).

        So I googled and found Pradopoint forum. I read through the post by krypto [link: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...n-and-rattles] and realized that this is the same issue happened to earlier models. Though in some recent replies people mentioned that on 2016 model the rattle and drone were improved (reduced), however, I agree with some comments that those improvements didn’t rectify the resonance totally.

        According to krypto, the resonance in air intake chamber is the root cause of the rattle and drone and the ultimate solution is to change the character of the panel by applying Dynamat etc. To proof this, I tested with some magnets (borrowed from my office).

        They are strong magnets used to hang accessories on metal chassis. I attached them to the front right panel with a soft cloth underneath to protect the paint. My theory was magnets would add weight to the panel so the resonance would be difficult to happen. Then I tested the car again and the rattle and drone were reduced.

        In the past, the rattle and drone could be sensed throughout 1500~2000 rpm range with varies strengths. Now I could only feel a short rattle when a particular frequency point (1700rpm) was hit.

        The overall driving became quieter. Possibly it was because the rattle and drone used to exist in all audible frequency ranges though not being realized.
        The test proved that the analysis by krypto was correct.

        So, the next step is to contact dealer and ask them to rectify the issue. Some people mentioned that there were some internal working instructions on how to rectify this issue in Toyota. However, I really doubt if there was any further improvement opportunity on latest model following the Toyota way. If no result, I would Dynamat the panel from inside by myself, following Krypto’s and Hollywood’s instructions in the above thread.

        Disclaimer: Rattle and drone are subjective description. They are based on people’s feeling and lack of objective measurement. It also varies between cars, and affected by tyres, accessories fitted, etc.

          Quite a few friends who have Prados have commented that mine is a fair bit quieter. I would recommend the Dynamat as a quick and relatively cheap fix with several benefits. Probably takes less time to do yourself than stuffing around getting a dealer to do it.

            Hi Guys, just a bit update with my car. Haven't got time to bring the car back to Dealer but had chance to discuss a bit with them about the solution. They mention they're gonna put some foam in there around the air clean box or pipe. Next week I'll bring the car to them and hopefully they can get it done.

              Thank you for the suggestion. Ordered Dynamat today. Not only for this issue, but also plan to do some sound proofing on 4 doors, as while as sound proofing for another Toyota - Prius V. Hope I could have enough time and skill to finish all these jobs. A lot of learning and hardworking :-)

                Maybe order some dynamat and ask dealer to help install it inside the panel while they add the foam?

                  Hi guys. My car's issues has gone. The had it done yesterday. The reason end up being some broken plastic parts in the intake piper which goes into the guard. They said it is very rare. It looks like come from the factory. But it's a pretty easy job. They just took it away and replaced something and I found it perfect now. The annoying rattle has gone! Hopefully it's over. Good job!

                      The Blue tack trick above fixed mine. Will get dealer to do permanent fix at first service.

                        Actually not fixed, and getting worse. Took the service manager for a ride today, he said it was bad, and he could feel it through the steering wheel (I cant really notice that). He looked a piece of trim on RHS bottom of windscreen which is apparent known problem, but mine was already changed. So its in for half a day on Thursday.....

                          Does anyone know anything about an "active engine mount" apparently there is one to reduce vibration in the 150 2.8 diesel. They are going to check mine today...?

                            Active engine mount....Jeepers, I didn't know the new Prados had these...I guess its something else to go wrong. Apparently its a mount that has an electrical solenoid type feature that the ECU controls to alter the stiffness....and thus changes the damping effect of an engine mount. Touch wood, I have not had a rattle or vibration whatsoever on the new 2016 GX

                              Will try this fix with my 2016 2.8 Prado drone noise is driving me nuts, same issue starts around 1600 rpm and sounds like a loose panel under the front gaurd. On first service they told me it was "drive-line resonation"noise and Toyota have a field fix to put a damper on the diff which they have ordered out of japan??? I have zero faith that this will achieve anything other than annoy me. I am going to ask them to look at the intake pipe that fixed your issue as that sounds like the area it comes from.

                                My 2016 2.8 Auto was having the same problem and the dealer fixed it and said the airbox was loose. apparently there some metal that it was vibrating against. what ever they did it fixed it cause its nice and quiet now.

                                Cheers

But I've found some noise coming form the right side of the bonnet. It only happens when the engine is around 1400-1600rpm at low speed(30km-50km) especially when climbing or accelerating. Nothing happened with engine running when it's in parking so I guess it could be some vibration. And the noise is like some plastics or thing metal shaking or clicking together. Brought the car back to dealer once, they tried the car and noticed the noise but didn't find out the reason. Will bring it back for another long time so that they can look at it again.

                                Anyone has got the same or similar problem? Really concerned...
